Leaps and Bounds Music Festival kicks off on Friday July 16.
No interstate travel? No worries. The 2021 Leaps and Bounds Music Festival program proves that Melbourne has more than enough talent and diversity to pack a ten-day festival full of live music, talks, markets and special events. After running the 2020 instalment virtually, this year’s LBMF will be a celebration of what makes the City of Yarra such a special live music ecosystem.
There are mini-festivals such as the soul, funk and hip hop extravaganza Fitzroyalty and label showcases from Bad Apples, The Push and Rockhopper Records. There are also intimate shows at The Tramway and The B.East, Sunday sessions at The Tote, late night parties at The Night Cat and even a First Nations trivia night.

After a difficult 2020, Thornbury Records has relocated to High St, Northcote

After a difficult 2020, Thornbury Records has relocated to High St, Northcote
Words By August Billy
We chat to Thornbury Records owner and manager Clayton Pegus about the tough journey to his new store.
Thornbury Records launched in the early months of 2011. At the time, Thornbury wasn’t quite the bustling locale of cafes, bars and boutiques it is today. Although it mightn’t be accurate to give T-Recs all the credit for catalysing this evolution, it was definitely one of the earliest examples of High St Thornbury’s rising hipsterdom.
Earlier this year, Thornbury Records celebrated its tenth anniversary. It was a bittersweet occasion, however, as owner and manager Clayton Pegus had recently been forced to abandon the shop’s original location.

Forbidden love and LGBTIQ+ activism intersect in Mark Salvestro's riveting play, 'The Will to Be'

The Will to Be reveals the legacy of systemic homophobia.
The 1960s is typically romanticised as a time of personal and cultural liberation driven by youth counterculture, feminism, civil rights and free love. But in much of the Western world, the laws regarding homosexuality were positively barbaric.
England and Wales decriminalised same-sex sexual activity for people over the age of 21 in 1967, while Illinois was the only US state to decriminalise any time before the 1970s. Australia wasn’t particularly sprightly in this regard, either. South Australia got there first, decriminalising acts of male homosexuality in 1975, and Victoria followed suit in 1981.

Review: Geraldine Hickey's 'What a Surprise' is a triumph of low stakes, high reward comedy

Review: Geraldine Hickey’s ‘What a Surprise’ is a triumph of low stakes, high reward comedy
Words By August Billy
★★★★★
During her allotted five minutes at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, Geraldine Hickey said the word “agapanthus” approximately 25 times. The bit – which centred on digging out some obstinate agapanthus and installing a “lesbian pit” in her backyard – was a perfect snapshot of Hickey’s easy-going, sensually tickling comedy style.
I don’t mean sensual in a Serge Gainsbourg, ‘Je T’aime’ sort of way. Rather, Hickey’s comedy recognises that humour arises from all our senses, is often arational and isn’t dependent on shock value.

Ben Folds was a virtuoso, comedian and educator in one when he came to Melbourne

We went along to Ben Folds’ Melbourne show on Monday and this is what went down.
It’s funny how familiar the prospect of seeing Ben Folds perform with a symphony orchestra has become. This is the guy from North Carolina who grew up “on sugar cereal and TV” and rose to fame playing a frequently tongue-in-cheek brand of alternative rock that he called “punk rock for sissies”. But over the last decade and a half, Folds has taken to aligning himself with orchestras.
