Patrick: The saint who knew what it was like to be a slave

By Kevin Jones
Among the most popular saints today, Saint Patrick was a bishop and missionary to Ireland. However, he also spent several years as a slave, and once issued a heartfelt plea on behalf of girls and boys abducted into slavery.
In his Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, St. Patrick intended to shame the fifth-century general whose raiding soldiers the saint declared to be “blood-stained with the blood of innocent Christians, whose numbers I have given birth to in God and confirmed in Christ.” He denounced those who “divide out defenseless baptized women like prizes.”
Patrick said he did not know what grieved him more: those who were slain, those who were captured, or the enslavers themselves – “those whom the devil so deeply ensnared.”

Pope appeals for dialogue to prevail over violence in Paraguay

VATICAN: Pope Francis on Wednesday prayed for peace and dialogue in Paraguay where protests over the difficult economic, political, and health conditions have led to instances of violence in recent days.
At the conclusion of his General Audience, the Pope expressed his concern over the situation and prayed that “through the intercession of Our Lady of Miracles of Caacupé”, a Marian shrine in Paraguay he visited in July 2015, “I ask the Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, that a path of sincere dialogue may be found to find adequate solutions to the current difficulties”.
"Sincere dialogue,” he said, is needed to overcome the violent unrest which is always self-destructive and where “nothing is gained through it, but much is lost, sometimes everything”.  Dialogue and solidarity can help “build together the longed-for peace”, he underscored.

Becoming more human through almsgiving

“Love ought to show itself more in deeds rather than words.” — St. Ignatius of Loyola
One of the basic things we do to express love is giving. Naturally, we give of our time, talents and treasure to our family and friends.
In this time of Lent, we are called to expand our horizons of love to those in need through almsgiving. By giving alms, we not only help the less fortunate, but we also grow in our own humanity.
Giving and receiving things is part of what it means to be a human being. None of us chose to exist. God’s creation is itself the primary gift.

Pope: "I too kneel on the streets of Myanmar"

VATICAN: “Once again and with great sadness I feel the urgency to evoke the dramatic situation in Myanmar, where so many people, especially young people, are losing their lives to offer hope to their country,” Pope Francis said at the end of his weekly general audience. “I too kneel on the streets of Myanmar and say: stop the violence! I too extend my arms and say: let dialogue prevail!” the Holy Father said.
Courage of Sister Ann Rosa Nu Tawng
He was obviously evoking the powerful image of Myanmar Catholic nun, Sister Ann Rosa Nu Tawng, who recently dissuaded the security forces from harming the peaceful protesters.  The incident took place on Feb. 28 in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin state, as the police readied themselves to crack down on the street protesters.  Undeterred by the danger, the 45-year-old Xaverian nun approached the police.  Then kneeling down before them she pleaded with folded hands not to harm the unarmed demonstrators.  She was ordered to leave immediately, but she stood her ground, saying, “Just shoot me if you want to. The protesters have no weapons and they are just showing their desire peacefully.” The video of her daring act went viral on social media, with various media networks, including the BBC, giving her coverage.

How a forgotten nun's visions shed 'new light' on the life of St. Joseph

By Courtney Mares
St. Joseph does not have any words recorded in Sacred Scripture, but the published meditations of an 18th-century Italian nun offer the chance to imagine the details of the Holy Family’s daily life as it might have been from the perspective of the foster father of Jesus.
Servant of God Mother Maria Cecilia Baij’s personal revelation, described in the book “The Life of Saint Joseph,” provides an intimate portrait of the life of prayer, suffering, and joy within the Holy Family.
As an artist might fill in the details in a painting depicting a scene in the life of Christ from the Bible, Baij’s account allows the reader to dwell on the scenes that could have made up Joseph’s life with Jesus and Mary, with a particular focus on his interior life.

Syrian Archbishop: Despite the difficulties, the Church is still here

ALEPPO: After a decade of violence and conflict, the civil war in Syria has exacted a heavy toll on its population. Millions have been killed, hundreds of thousands have been injured or are displaced, and an untold number are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Particularly affected in this terrible situation are the children. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports that about 90 percent are in need of urgent aid as they have been profoundly impacted by violence, displacement, severance of family ties and lack of access to vital services such as education and healthcare. All these emergencies, further aggravated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, paint a grim picture.

Syria: From Pius IX to Francis, a land never forgotten

By Amedeo Lomonaco
After ten years of conflict, Syria’s ongoing civil war has exacted a heavy toll: more than 400,000 victims, 12 million persons displaced, and 12.4 million people suffering from food insecurity. Amid such darkness, the light of authentic peace has yet to be found.
The way of peace
"Peace does not demand winners or losers, but rather brothers and sisters who, for all the misunderstandings and hurts of the past, are journeying from conflict to unity. Let us ask for this in praying for the whole Middle East. Here I think especially of neighbouring war-torn Syria." The way of peace is not possible without "sharing and acceptance." These are the words that sum up the greatest hope for Syria, expressed by Pope Francis on 6 March during the Inter-religious Meeting in the Plain of Ur, in Iraq, in the land of Abraham.
