The wartime memento was owned by Marcel Zillessen, who helped mastermind the breakout of 76 men from the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in 1944.

But in 2019, excavation work at an airport turned up the plane that carried the remains of six Allied airmen.
Using DNA from living relatives, scientists confirmed a body found among the wreckage belonged to the 25-year-old gunner with the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
His niece, Pam Compton, received confirmation of the DNA tests proving his identity in late December 2020.
She said: “No one in the family knew much about him at all.

“My mother was so sad [about his death]. His photo was on the wall but she never talked about him.”

Rebecca Vilkomerson took to Twitter and wrote: “My 14-year-old daughter’s description of the movie Dunkirk: ‘isn’t it just a bunch of white boys waiting for boats?’” But Twitter users have attacked this view, with many posting pictures of their relatives who fought in the war.
