VVD senators back forcing more councils to take in refugees
The police arrested a 76-year-old man for trying to hit Mayor Boy Scholtze of Drimmelen in Noord-Brabant with his car on Monday morning as he walked from the town hall to his car. The mayor had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, the police said. The man also shouted homophobic slurs at the gay Scholtze. Outgoing Minister of Justice Dilan Yeşilgöz called it “horrible” that Scholtze had been attacked. “In the Netherlands, you can be who you are and love who you want,” she wrote on X.
The Security Council, the council of mayors that chair the Netherlands' 25 security regions, wants to cut financial support for Ukrainian refugees. “We are reaching the limits, and the end of the war is not in sight,” said Wouter Kolff, chairman of the Security Council and mayor of Dordrecht. According to him, Ukrainians opt for the Netherlands over other EU countries because our financial support scheme is better, NOS reports.
Third-country nationals from Ukraine will not have to leave shelters in several Dutch municipalities for the time being. According to a survey by ANP that included around 300 municipalities, cities like Eindhoven, Groningen, Arnhem, Ede, Deventer, and Roermond have announced that they will not turn these refugees out onto the streets as of Monday.
The District Court of The Hague ruled against the outgoing Cabinet on Wednesday, saying the Netherlands cannot arbitrarily end the temporary protection of three third-country nationals from Ukraine starting on September 4. The ruling is the result of separate lawsuits filed by two third-country nationals of Indian citizenship and one of Moroccan citizenship. The Ministry of Justice and Security said the ruling will not hinder their plans to stop the reception of third-country nationals beginning on Monday.
