ACCC clears path for MYOB's GreatSoft acquisition

After initial fears buyout could hinder competition.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) won’t oppose MYOB’s acquisition of accounting software GreatSoft, finding it won't weaken market competition.
Under the purchase, MYOB plans to combine its desktop practice management software with GreatSoft’s a cloud-based accounting solution.
GreatSoft provides a single cloud-based practice management module that integrates with third-party software suppliers for other accounting modules, including Xero for Xero Tax.
The ACCC was originally concerned the acquisition would significantly reduce market competition, leaving only three major suppliers of practice management software for medium-to-large customers.

NZ Commerce Commission completes consumer mobile phone bills review
Featured
New Zealand’s competition enforcement agency, The Commerce Commission, has completed its review of consumer mobile phone bills following feedback from the telecommunications industry on their plans for providing customers with more “meaningful product and service comparisons” and to guard against overspending.
Completion of the review comes after the Commission published an open letter in September 2020, asking telcos Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees to share their customer service plans. This was accompanied by a report from Schiff Consulting, aspects of which were later contested by the industry.

iTWire - Synology all-flash storage solutions: three key benefits

Card image cap

COMPANY NEWS from Synology: Traditional HDD storage arrays are quickly giving way to all-flash arrays (AFA) as businesses need the low latency and high IOPS provided by solid-state drives to store growing pools and new types of data for increasingly demanding applications. However, choosing suitable servers is not always easy.
All-flash storage is designed for high-performance applications, placing high demands on product innovation and stability. For many businesses and teams, that often translates to prices that stretch their IT budget. However, AFA arrays provide tangible benefits that can boost your operational efficiency and competitiveness.
Cost is a major obstacle to purchasing their first AFA solution for many companies. Will new IT infrastructure bring enough value to your company? And how fast will your investment repay itself? Luckily, with more vendors entering the market, prices and total cost of ownership for flash arrays are on a downward trend.

Guest Opinion: The Australian government has begun an earnest battle against ransomware in March 2021. Citizens are being urged to increase their cyber literacy to understand what malware, ransomware, and potential cybercrime may look like. Peter Dutton’s report may have pointed to the basics – multi-factor authentication and encrypted sites – but what else can businesses and regular Australians do to combat cybercrime?
The first line of defence of encryption and password control should be a given, especially as more of the population is moving online. As older generations begin their online journeys, extra care must be taken to ensure they aren’t sucked into scams. Younger people may be savvier to what a bad actor in the digital world looks like, but older people aren’t. So, as much as it is important to provide as much education as possible, businesses must do something too.

As expected, there is a wide range of cloud services that you can opt for. There's hardly a limit to your options from One Drive to Dropbox, to Google Drive, and even Amazon Drive. Now, while opting for one is a good idea, you can do better by opting for multiple cloud services. In this case, you'll need to sync the data between different clouds.

Bruce Bennie, A/NZ VP & GM, Juniper Networks
Today more than ever, networks play an increasingly prominent role in our daily lives. Whilst we are already more connected than we ever have been, the COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated our reliance on networks as remote working and increased digital engagements become the norm.
To survive and thrive, businesses must ensure they are laser-focused on consistently delivering excellent customer experiences. This concept is called ‘Experience-First Networking’, which requires a high level of network automation to ensure large-scale networks are run safely and efficiently.
According to ReportLinker, the global network automation market is expected to reach $27.85 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 19.8% during the forecast period. The Asia Pacific region is expected to witness the highest growth rate over this period, which is in part thanks to the increasing investment in 5G technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

IBM introduced the first desktop PC in 1981—the same year as Sage’s inception in Newcastle, UK, developing an estimating and accounting software for small businesses. Sage has since grown to almost a 2 billion USD worldwide organization. Sage’s group CEO, Stephen Kelly took the helm in November 2014 and the company’s technology strategy is finally in the right trajectory. Until Kelly, Sage is one of the last accounting software firms to offer cloud-centric solutions. This strategic delay by its previous leadership has had consequences— market-share loss to competitors such as Microsoft Dynamics GP, Intuit, Saasu, Xero, Netsuite, and other AAMEA (Australia, Asia, Middle East and Africa) and European players—all of whom offered faster implementation via online accounting cloud alternatives early in the game.
