600 Chadians Arrested Over Protest Against Military Govt.

Chadian police on Saturday shot a protester and arrested about 20 others defying a ban to demonstrate against the junta that took power after veteran ruler Idriss Deby Itno died fighting rebels.
Only a few dozens of people took to the streets in sporadic groups after military authorities late Friday banned the protest called by the Wakit Tama grouping of opposition political parties and civil society bodies.
“Some 20 people have been detained by the security forces and a single person was injured by a live bullet,” N’Djamena prosecutor Youssouf Tom told AFP.
“The policeman who fired the shot had taken drugs and was finally arrested and will answer for his action,” he added.

Chadian police disperse opposition protest

The Chadian police dispersed dozens of opposition demonstrators with tear gas, wounding one person.
The march was organized by the opposition and civil society in N'Djamena against the junta that took power after the death of President Idriss Déby Itno.
The military authorities on Friday banned rallies planned by Wakit Tama, a coalition of opposition parties and civil society representatives, which had called for demonstrations against the Transitional Military Council (TMC), headed by Idriss Déby's son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, who holds almost all the power.
"About 20 people were arrested by the police and only one person was injured by live ammunition," Youssouf Tom, the prosecutor in N'Djamena, told AFP.

Chad: Family buries teen slain in protests against military council

The family and friends of
Synna Garandi Noullah, a 19-year-old student who died during a demonstration against the junta in Chad, gather in a cemetery in N'Djamena for the funeral.
At least six people died Tuesday during banned protests against Chad's new military junta, with its leader pledging national dialogue as generals take charge following the shock battlefield death of his father and veteran ruler
Idriss Deby Itno.
Deby's 37-year-old son Mahamat, who heads a
Transitional Military Council (TMC), pledged an "inclusive national dialogue" after violent protests in the capital N'Djamena and the south of Chad, a country seen as crucial in the fight against jihadists in the Sahel region.

Clashes intensify as hundreds quizzed by prosecutors in Chad after being detained in military clampdown

CLASHES intensified between government forces and armed rebels in western Chad today as hundreds of the military junta’s opponents, detained during protests, were quizzed by prosecutors.
Some 700 people were arrested after taking part in banned protests on Tuesday and Wednesday, in which at least six were shot dead by soldiers.
Dozens were brought to Chad’s highest court, in the capital N’Djamena on Thursday from a number of cities across the country.
“A majority of them have already been through and many have been released,” state prosecutor Youssouf Tom said.
The country has been thrown into turmoil since the death of president Idriss Deby earlier this month. He is reported to have succumbed to injuries sustained on the battlefield, though the circumstances remain unclear.
