Alex Eala sustains rise in WTA singles rankings

By
Senior Reporter
ALEX Eala of the Philippines has sustained her ascent in the world rankings, now at a career-high 763 in the latest list released by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
Fifteen-year-old Eala saw her rankings climb by 140 points from her previous spot built on strong showing in recent tournaments she participated in.
Ms. Eala, a Rafa Nadal Academy scholar and longtime Globe ambassador, won her first professional women’s singles title when she defeated Spanish player Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers in the finals of the first leg of the Rafael Nadal Academy ITF World Tennis Tour in Mallorca, Spain, last month.

A second pro title remained elusive for Alex Eala as the Filipino teen star bowed out in the third leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) W15 Manacor after losing to Oksana Selekhmeteva of Russia, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals on Friday night (Philippine time) in Mallorca, Spain.
After a lethargic play in the opening set, the 15-year-old Eala put up a valiant fight in the second set but still fell short against the 18-year-old, higher-ranked Selekhmeteva to exit the $15,000 (over P720,000) tilt.
Eala sits at No. 942 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings while fellow junior reserve Selekhmeteva is at No. 611.

Alex Eala gets another crack at a pro title when she competes in the third leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s World Tennis Tour competition in Manacor, Spain this week.
The 15-year-old PH rising star made it to the 32-player main draw as a junior reserve in the $15,000 tournament hosted by the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar.
She is set to collide with unseeded Ana Lantigua de la Nuez, a 20-year-old Spaniard with a Woman’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of 619.
But Eala is riding on morale-boosting finishes in the first two legs where she captured her first pro title in the first leg at the expense of Spain’s Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers, as well as a quarterfinal finish in the second leg.
