A young man is sent to 'La Maca,' a prison in the middle of the Ivorian forest ruled by its inmates. As tradition goes with the rising of the red moon, he is designated by the Boss to be the new 'Roman' and must tell a story to the other prisoners. Night of the Kings review – a heady Ivorian brew of fact and fantasy

Sun 25 Jul 2021 03.00 EDT
Of the three Ivory Coast submissions for the foreign language film Oscar over the years, two have been by the writer-director Philippe Lacôte: 2014’s
Run, which was widely regarded as heralding an Ivorian film-making renaissance, and
Night of the Kings (2020), one of 15 films shortlisted for the renamed best international feature award. A shapeshifting tale of incarceration and emancipation, it may have missed out on an Oscar nomination, yet its vivid, genre-fluid investigation of the alchemical art of storytelling definitely hits the mark.
In a remote clearing on the edge of Abidjan’s Banco forest stands the notorious Maison d’arrêt et de correction d’Abdijan – La Maca – an institution described by one of its keepers as “the only prison in the world run by an inmate”. A commanding aerial shot highlights the prison’s isolation, a brutal structure hidden by dense vegetation. Captions introduce us to “a world with its own codes and laws”, the first and foremost of which is that “the Dangôro, the supreme master, rules the prisoners”.

CINEMA Film round-up | Morning Star

⭑⭑⭑⭑
KATE BECKINSALE steps up to see if she can claim the Theron crown in this latest female-fronted post-John Wick bisexually inflected actioner.
The Underworld star gets her own riff on cult-fave Crank, a rage-powered ball of hyper-violent Wickian chaos kept at bay only by periodic electric shocks. But she tosses the power switch aside when her hunky love interest is killed under dodgy circumstances and the trail to his killer leads all the way through to... The Underworld.
Beckinsale delivers a magnetic performance, effortlessly boosting an otherwise very nuts’n’bolts by-the-numbers female-led shoot ‘em up, not especially indistinguishable from Atomic Blonde, Anna, Lucy or Peppermint.

As the child of a Nigerian immigrant, my allergy to idleness was definitely nurture not nature. But you know the old proverb about all work turning Jack into a dull boy, and I’ve certainly grown to appreciate relaxation’s merits. In today’s Weekender, we make the case for laziness, offering ways to make peace with your inner couch potato, from a classical album and some shows worth starting to tech that will make your dry cleaning a breeze. Call us lazy, say we’re wasting our time, just don’t call us while we’re off the clock. Here are some picks for a weekend without worries.

Song Kang-ho wonders whether you're the serial killer he's searching for in "Memories of Murder."
I couldn’t get to the few movies that are being released in theaters this week, so I thought I’d run another of my yearly features delayed to the spring by [
gestures at everything]. I write this article about movies that I didn’t have a chance to review or write up in Film Shorts, and there were more of those this year. This piece is therefore longer than usual. Hope you’re okay with that.
The Danish title for this film translates as simply “Drunk,” which would have been a better name for this comedy about a group of high-school teachers who make a group bet to see which of them can drink the most alcohol during the day and still teach class. Mads Mikkelsen plays the history teacher who actually improves his job performance when he’s hammered, because he (like his colleagues) sucks at his job to begin with. The Oscar-nominated film comments acidly on Denmark’s drinking culture, and it just gets funnier the more these men imbibe. The main character has a daughter who does charity work in Africa, which is writer-director Thomas Vinterberg’s tribute to his own daughter, who did the same work before dying in a car accident in 2019.

Storytelling Is Power in the Mesmerizing 'Night of the Kings'

JAIL TALES Koné plays a newcomer to a dreaded prison who must spin stories to survive in Lacôte's gritty fable.
Our streaming entertainment options are overwhelming — and not always easy to sort through. This week, I watched a prison drama from Ivory Coast that was short-listed for the 2021 Academy Awards. An inventive blend of realism and fable,
Night of the Kings streams through the Vermont International Film Foundation's Virtual Cinema through April 15. Find more info at vtiff.org.
The deal
In most prisons, the warden's word is law. In Abidjan's notorious La MACA prison, we're told, the inmates themselves choose their king. For years, that has been Blackbeard (Steve Tientcheu), but now illness has painted a target on his forehead. Tradition requires an ailing king to surrender his throne and his life, but Blackbeard won't go down without a fight.
