Feb. 24—Vaccine hunting websites are merging social media savvy with old-fashioned phone calls, popping up nearly overnight to join a growing digital community dedicated to tracking down available COVID-19 vaccines.
"We thought, 'There has to be some better way.' We went from conversation to website in less than 24 hours," said Zoelle Egner, a co-organizer of the California vaccination information site VaccinateCA.com.
The site debuted in January, one of the many crowdsourced vaccine tracking sites and online wait lists that have emerged across a nation where the death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 501,000 as of Tuesday evening, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 49,000 in the state have died from the virus as of Tuesday, California Department of Public Health numbers show.

On Jan. 14 at 8:43 p.m., Patrick McKenzie tweeted a plea for tech engineers to help him set up a website to track covid-19 vaccine availability in California. McKenzie, who heads a Bay Area financial services tech company, issued the call to "anyone in California [who] wants to do a civtech project which matters."
The response was swift and resounding. In less than an hour, someone had set up a chat group for brainstorming the effort. By 12:24 a.m. the next day, 70 people had joined. By noon, the tracker was live. Now, just over two weeks later, the site, called VaccinateCA, involves about 300 volunteers. They operate what is essentially a call bank, dialing pharmacies and hospitals for updates about covid vaccine supplies and posting the results on the site.

The U.S. is currently administering around 1 million shots of the COVID-19 vaccine a day, but that doesn’t mean the process is going well. Of the roughly 48 million doses that have been distributed, only 47.8% have been administered. Many people who are eligible for the vaccine are having trouble getting their hands on a shot.
We know that at least 6.7% of the U.S. population has received at least one shot of the two-dose vaccine, but only 1.1% have gotten both. States like Alaska and West Virginia have either surpassed or are about to surpass the 10% threshold, but large states like New York and California continue to fall short.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Is it my turn to get a COVID-19 vaccine? If so, where can I find one? How do I make an appointment?
Several weeks in to California's coronavirus vaccine rollout, the state is still struggling to provide quick and easy answers to those questions. So a group of locals, most of them tech workers, stepped in to help.
"People should come together and make things work," said Manish Goregaokar, a software engineer at Google. "We shouldn't have to wait for someone else to do it."
They created a crowdsourced database of every vaccination location in California at VaccinateCA.com.
