American Gods recap: Season 3, Episode 8, "Ashes & Demons"

American Gods has
wandered away somewhat from the “Coming To America” stories since the first season, but this week, the series returns to the concept, though not entirely from the usual angle. This week’s god, Tu’er Shen (Daniel Jun), known as the rabbit god and the deity of same-sex love in China, has already been in America for 100 years when we meet him in 1951. He’s on the run and given shelter at the Grand Peacock Inn by its transgender proprietor, Toni (Dana Aliya Levinson), who recognizes one of the cops chasing him as a closet case from her past life. As a thank you, Tu’er Shen blesses the inn as his new temple, declaring it will run for decades to come. And lo, it still stands today, as Laura and Salim pull up in their hearse.

American Gods recap: Season 3, Episode 6, "Conscience Of The King"

“Why am I not surprised the Buckeye state has a freaky Norse underbelly?”
This week’s opening scene brings the show back a second time to the Revolutionary War. But unlike last time, which was a means of segueing to the African peoples dragged to America against their will, this week’s intro forks to how the white men murdering their way across the continent helped revive the Norse gods of war. It also features the jarring choice to have Ian McShane do a VO from the jump. That’s because this isn’t our usual “Coming to America” tale. It’s Odin, telling us about a love story, his and Demeter’s.

The roadway here in the Route one area I was passing through the I p c a little bit earlier and definitely can get a early start of rush hour traffic there and then as you continue forward to make your way to the jacket intersection and it does get busy years especially for that turning lane. Well we went away past the mobile intersection ride that the mobile intersection as you're making way there you'll notice of the turning when it goes and the airport road can be pretty busy as the wells so you are trying to make your way just straight to continue past the immobile intersection in the morning and then to the Jazz cage I would suggest staying on the it on the inner and the middle lane and as those 2 will take you straight whereas the outer lane you know you got a lot of cars taking that turn and it could stop you from just continuing to a head on straight through not taking a look at traffic elsewhere we do have a pretty bad back up in the southern part of Guam right in front of the a naval base they got a lot of cars coming and going through that area as well as cars taking a turn to go until I get home please just strengthens me while you're out here on the go a robin of these reports actually let me just add in one more thing and don't forget we do have d.p.w. Kid. Like a daycare yet like not not like your sending your cat to school. Ok let's see only a true Avenger nerd can this quiz. I'm just going through it this is all really easy. Net Sorry Paul I didn't I didn't get this is not an alternate Avengers quiz you guys quiz dot com You call yourself a quiz. And not going to try to make it as easy as like what is Shield stand for who is Loki's brother. There's also a lot of questions that require you to be taking the quiz on the website like what is this character's name. A. Kid a yeah I'm going to I'm going to try you know let's do an Avengers comic comic trivia about that. 100 tiny Avengers quiz. Can you pass the hardass event Ok play Buzz dot com. And they're using the comic book Ball Ok. Ok. Here we go. In the original comic books Thor's What was the war's name. And what it was and for it wasn't for. India original comic Oh that's right does he have a secret identity right. Or or let me I let me just load up the like more on the answer because I have the answer I don't have the explanation Ok so be the 1st call to answer this comic book nerd trivia question in the original comics Thor's earth name was I should say Earth name Thor's earth name was what in the original comics call for $775750.00 whatever it was a regular name no. Yeah. Ok oh well there were we're getting some answers some callers I think it's just as easy as Thor original name on Google honestly so let me just take this in random order in honor of Thor's brother Loki half a day color what's the right answer. It is Donald blame. You said it wasn't a normal name Oh I thought you said a read what do you say a red banner name a regular read I heard read read something name I might know it's not a red name Ok ma'am you can be on is unlike Loki did did you did you look up the answer that's totally cool if you did. Ok that's fine because Wasn't there a Donna Blake Easter egg in the 1st time not sure but Donal Dr Donald Blake an ardent to his idea in the 1st Thor movies well for all the comic book nerds out there this is the earth $616.00 in the Marvel Universe Dr Donald Blake was created by ode in to be the host for his son for a ridge an all appearance August of 19. 62 so who's or lucky winner with the quick googling fingers. Ok Well Kristen again this is my final pair that I'm giving away today actually before the screening I'm just going to ask you Can you pick up your ticket before tomorrow at 5 pm. Don't go anywhere going to put you on hold Kristen and Paul's going to get your winner information I try listen I try to make it hard but I guess that was an easy answer to to look up. Again from the earth 616 universe I don't know if it's 616 or 616 How did the nerds do that Odin decided that it was time. For Thor to learn humility Odin had Thor surrender his hammer and sent him to earth in the mortal guise of a crippled young Harvard University medical student named Donald Blake stripped of his memory. So he didn't know his true identity Thor learned the value of humble perseverance in dealing with his injured leg and he came to care for the sick and dying 1st as a medical student later as a physician and after meat leaving medical school Blake opened up a private practice in New York quickly gained renown as a great surgeon which is not that that's always a that's always a theme with or that hubris of the God of Thunder is normally like that's usually like a plot device for why the villain is able to get one over on him because he's being too cocky I was correct in the Thor movie the the 1st Thor movie he had a falsified New York State driver's license that said Dr Donald. Ok well that would have been fancier. Even with what's her name and you know. President Queen Amidala killing me any. You know what is it you're brick and you're breaking my door that's that's my Queen Amidala impression 521 in the afternoon it's a time to I don't know why when it's your beings it's time to think you know I don't know I'm trying to you know get get get. You know I think that's a good accomplish our goal better right Ok talk about traffic hang on Ok No well let's just do news 1st and then traffic or is there something against that Paul was just. It does not compute if you go outside the order. I like things just so our producers are very good about keeping things and listen with the you know with Lucy goosey way that I show Ok I need to be able. I'm Ok well you know I read Trackman doesn't a child make here in the Route one area is making about wading through Daddy I thought I made a fool I mean I actually did make a holder gold today of the make about way into the dado area to permit the start of the Micronesia Ma and then as you continue northbound on out one still very busy there still believe is a just drive thru the route one area and then also let's not forget that we have a d.p.w. Out there right in front of the media new compounds and they are accepting monetary donations that will be going to the Relay for Life All donations will be going to relay for life so the a light has supported that please that go on by there but also be on the look out for them as well as they're out there on the roadways collecting as donations other than the odd traffic elsewhere in the south all supporters in are all high and you got a pretty busy especially by the pools you got a lot of people checking out the beautiful beautiful Giles' beautiful polls and and of course tour buses there as well so just drive safely whether you're coming from or headed to the inner onto all the area and I pretty much did here silly We're going continue on our way north that on and as you go out is happening others are now wrapping up these reports being backed by mobile you want energy lanes here and of course our friends over there on autos body can spring into more value and get the g.m.c. After the after the what was it called the Doom. Yes Ok the Sammy know me bran knows the words perhaps I mean the 1st man. Yes Game of Thrones happened yesterday I was so good I can even bring it up to you guys and I washed it during lunch yesterday as I was very proud of myself because I was so satisfied as a longtime viewer of this series I didn't want to give any indication or influence anyone and I think I did the job because although Drea enjoyed the episode Paul surprise surprise had some things to gripe about. Yeah Paul Nothing happened there's no grand of effect shots no battles Ok how he got killed it will this will this work for you Paul from Steve all we got was Side Are You a boob that's all we got will this will this help for you Paul Stephen King as a long time storyteller I'm in awe of how perfectly the minds behind this show brought all the major characters together at Winterfell they made it look easy Constant readers it is not yeah see that was my thing some of these carry felt very satisfying to me some of these characters have not been in a scene together like ever. Or I was trying to figure out last night in the same place Kendry an aria I have spent quality time together was I could be a family song and song What's her name. Yeah where you go oh yeah they shared a scene a very tense scene sure to me it was like a lot of the satisfying things like like the sort of you know the shady bits of formality like wouldn't have made sense if I didn't know what was going on and what was expected like like a classic example Paul 1st time that they interacted to your point Andrea on a star. More Mon and Joram or mine there are a member of the little argument that they had was such a reflect all nice refreshing scene and you know like her dismissing Giora with we're done here and then taking you know a step and a half and then turning around and wishing him good fortune cousin. Yeah you know that was and then you know Joran calling her my lady you know like all of that was oddly satisfying obviously and I don't know spoiler alert spoiler alert spoiler alert but what what happened with Brienne of Tarth felt like a very satisfying moment to a long time viewer who is emotionally invested in that specific character I think there was a lot of character satisfaction of the things that I really loved is. The weapon that that are you know one of the things is what what's a weapon What's a weapon What's a weapon it's her blind girl stick with with your tips on it you know like that is just so bad somewhere in the middle of the episode to episode all that came to my mind was what happened of recurring. Girl you know what I mean he wasn't killed I told you if you pull said that but I think I can remember no Remember he was killed with his dad it was in the battle of the bastards you started off remember he was Rick on Star great yeah I mean the battle of the bastards what's his name Ramzi can remember you had him captive he released him and he was running across the field and you're on a tiny search been teeming whatever it's called he wasn't going into his yes exactly wasn't he was not zig zagging and so he got shot I see he said he said he died with his dad and well I'm thinking about it all thinking about the other guy is his father was yeah yeah did you know everything about who's that guy the guy the died with his dad or a couple of seasons ago a couple seasons ago oh you're talking about Dick on Dick Armey. To help with the father of exotic Harley sometimes brother and dad what one person's regard as another person. You know. But yeah I was just it was so satisfying for so many reasons like oh my god Arias stick blind stick girl training is finally paying off and she's going to kill someone walkers with that state right and the Belaire in steel so you have the presentation Yeah you don't get even a little bit emotional about Paul your dad taught me how to be a man and your dad taught me how to be good and if you're much of a lame nerd that I don't know how to fight so here use it I can't yeah I can't hold the thing yet but that's what he said I can't even hold it up right yeah. Ok what about you know it was a little bit of a cheap shot there that's so that's his excuse to go down into the into the cellar with his men. He said Well tartly killer of White Walkers lover of women all right . You know vote woman what's her name Gilly Gilly has been putting away the groceries are you like is she like you might have a kid I was or what I thought I think I did it is green for me yeah yeah character might have been because even the angle like that was something blocking her good up north you know she she like held a pumpkin or a target on her belly or something like that. I just look a little soul something that did touch my heart and I did think it was a trope and it was a cheap shot was that they clear Shereen look alike walking up to what's his face the onion Knight where should I go. And she even had the she had like a scar I know reminiscent of right I don't remember I'm like but I wasn't green or that I don't know it was just that she got burned in the fire something that was The Shining was a brother of a turning robber. Well this is name Robert and I was trying to member so he had 2 brothers really and Stannis standing there you go gosh I couldn't remember that last night I was watching some of the Lauren histories of the. Saturday night. Not just the recap it's a supplemental much he writes I watch that end because because of the sort of plane reading as interesting as it was I must have fallen see like 20 times to me it is amazing time story yeah and you know like the fact that h.b.o. Threw money just so that actors themselves could voice that you know I'm going to talk about the tar Garion family and I'm Emilia Clarke right you know like that is that was like Ok good for you found the money because it could have been anyone was right they were they would put those out one person I think I don't know where yeah they were using it it was one of the d.v.d. Extras. Old there's the name of the actors actually have a hotline set up you can hear is the most popular show on television but with so many characters plots and locations it can be difficult to keep track of what's going on now there's help with Game of Thrones for just to 99 a minute are certified experts will give you the answers you can trust game of. That which you can watch every night Tuesday through Saturday on a.b.c. 7 I like the musical when you say it's Monday on t.v. Staff I was going to say because Saturday it's Friday on t.v. Stuff. You know actually I do have a gripe and I think that Paul would appreciate this little grape because because he is very much about the pot holes that riddle this show about travel humor last we saw the unsullied they were trapped at Castle Iraq with no ships surrounded by an armada of iron borne and nowhere to go so how did they get here nor a Winterfell maybe just totally unexplained maybe they have to ride on a dragon that's my one that's my one great Paul and there was a lot of them yeah that basically they made it safe and sound no big deal it still doesn't ruin it for me it doesn't ruin it for me but as soon as I as soon as I saw them and I'm like I mean explain why I'm brown and then they did in that episode I was like oh I wonder what Paul is going to say to the 7 kingdoms Express . They just called a new burger. A group share a ride share it said the red eye Ok. The big battle is coming between the living in the dead now something that I would like to see if you guys have a difference of opinion on just straight up because of the amount of episodes that have passed and the amount of episodes that are ahead so we know that this is a 6 episode season 2 down 4 to go we know that the next battle is going to be episode the big battle is going to be at least episode 3 some people are saying maybe it's going to be 2 episodes whatever but Paul given the fact that there will be between 3 and 2 episodes following this big battle. Who is or are there going to be any survivors of this Winterfell encounter everyone is preparing to die everyone right and they've been saying we're all going to die we're going to die we're all right which you know we think that overall brand says What do you think how do you know there's nothing else yeah well that well the reason why I think at least from last night's episode that gives that credibility is they sort of stop at resolving John Snow's admission at least John and Danny right so that we know who's going to have the iron throne after this right I don't know that that's going to be resolved during battle or you know during this or they're just going to shout at each other from the dragon back so it's mean there's no argument he's the 1st male born and I know what you know what if you kept there you know he's abdicate Paul. I don't want it I know you know nothing I never wanted to be king. You know nothing. That I know Paul do you think ever was just going to die and Suzy just going to like you know why you know now that your enemies for 2 episodes downs going to die to you were so she's going to die there's a you know there's dineros he said Guy I'm sorry I think the why Walker boss why Walker is going to come in to look as they showed out more white like what was going to boss is than ever before there's a whole line of but I mean there's a whole lot of dead people down in the cellar one of Ned Stark is a. Bare bones bro so the horses are bone Yeah they're pretty but I know but they still have flesh attached to him and I don't know you never think that zombie Ned Stark is going to kill all the women and children it would be called or I don't know if you know this but they're bringing Sean Bean back for any reason is a good idea in my gray Do either of you know about the other resurrected character that is in the books but not in the t.v. Show and that's not the uncle I tried to read the books like was in the what happened to his uncle that when there was a Black Fish know that there was on the other side of the low Remember he said he died he died saving Johnson Oh yeah oh I remember he ran into the horde with his little show I'm actually dying with this to Norris incense along with. He was there and he gave his horse to John Wright and Davis Ok so who is the No I don't think you give us horses John I think you ran old with this horse maybe I'm getting confused with season one who so who is there or maybe he just stood there like come at me bro I thought John rode in on his shoulders I only know that you know I think you know I think you're right like I have to you're right I so they're the reason why he escaped the north that time is because his uncle sacrificed him so k. So who is the undead that that's not in the book in the store in the t.v. Show well you know just just based off of your what if there's in the corrupt stark but how is it how is how can she be is only a start it was never fully explained in the books it has something to do with the power of the Lord of Light something something oh oh yeah that's right I forgot about that she becomes I think in theirs as well she like temporarily leads the yeah there's this whole story of how if you comes back yeah she does she does part of like Ari ever revenge to remember a couple of seasons ago we were like speculating what if they do this one of yeah but they never did it sort of Paul's point maybe there is going to be a zombie in the crypt because Catlin Stark is there yeah and that they have in the books then everyone is like where they don't lady throne are which is what they call or in the books is driven by them but there you see if they did that that's way further down in the story than it should have been well and also you know they got rid of the one person who could bring somebody back to life or 2 they got rid of both of them the red one temporarily I don't know maybe the Red Lady is just going to I'm here in Winterfell right because she just carried one of the last 3 episodes Your she and she would be great edition because he was with them and then he was not and she just kind of like she's going to like appear in a sunbeam or something after the after that it's something to she die and I don't know if she won't remember he was there she. She was. As soon as John Snow got to he was there agonized he left and she said that she's going to s.o.s. And that she will be back in in the 7 kingdoms one last time to die. And it's because both her and what's his name the other you Nick the fat bald you know various areas right now that her and various need to die in this strange land . You mean she's not strange smoke is not going to come out of her I don't know and I don't know I would much rather have that than the monster from fern gully though do you remember that motor oil monster Well you know all it reminded me of was what was the smoke in la. When I saw it as you know like they never explained that smoke in Los did that. Ok let's give one name of somebody who we think is going to survive. Winterfell battle next I was next week next week's battles know who is definitely going to survive definitely not see Ok let's say besides Jon Snow and in areas target area who else is going to survive are you she still got the shooting to go with are you my pick 2 only because she's triple wielding bro or the guy that doesn't die she has needle she has she has the Valarie instilled Baghdad her and she has that you know staff both staff with the sword to spear tips the guy that brought himself back to life one by the way spear tips are spearhead spearheads Ok how do you incorporate of city in into metal I still stand how they do that you you it's the same thing you you build a little well and that's your holes and then you screw you put a screw through all 3 know there's a dragon glasses Obsidian there is this has been established how do you miss melt that into if you don't smell they're not smelting it you brush it so that the cylinder is hollow there's 2 parts in the cylinder yeah left cylinder insert blade here with a little extra long handle it's how everyone's been doing it Ok and then you put the 2nd part of the cylinder close and then you put a screw through all 3 part of the city in this fragile. Strong enough to to beat up people with like eyes waxes on that hairy stump and took that x. And y. Acted on it he said and it still held Yeah. We'll try that with real Obsidian that's going to I don't think that they're really I don't think that it's real obsidian that they're using brown but it's canon that it's Obsidian I mean they're calling it Obsidian but they're not saying as a name and invisible properties and a little. There's also dragons Paul I'm pretty sure Dragon Fire can't do what it's been doing again is also wild fire ball I'm pretty sure you can you don't fire on top I'm pretty sure fire doesn't spread fire at Israel spread over I was you Satan spread over there was shit I guess oil firewood We also talked about the breast milk of giants Ok so add a little observing the whole episode was good enough for me to finally learn why torment John's brain is called that. 10 minutes of the top the hour let's bring somebody let's bring a 4th perspective to the conversation Mark I know that he's been talking about Game of Thrones usually with Andrea over the years how often he mark everybody all right sir how about you oh good i got one for you Ok well you know it's well let's just going to die yeah we're going to survive yeah they're all going to fight they're all going to survive yeah because you're going to come back you know bring everybody back and I know you think that she's going to she's going to do what the night King did and she just going to walk up and raise her hands and all of Winterfell will come back alive. Well not all of what did I just I mean oh Ok in the script when you saw the script Mark. Go to starring you got like you had a story they killed Sean Bean and he was starring in the 1st season everybody World War 3. Star. Mark Messier looks like looks like a Ridley is coming back yeah I mean this is the way I would look at it like a going to come back and doormat The Lord of the night going to somehow make an appearance and what is bad he's going to resurrect Ok And after they're done with the day walkers I get together and the one thing I was expecting last night because the guy that got the title of the. Anointed are not in the seventy's and the night of the night yeah yeah I was thinking they were going to do something like one night from each each of the kingdoms will or will get together you know amongst themselves because themselves the 71. Well they did that when they went drinking sure I did love that drinking that drinking scene gave me all the feels Marc let me just ask you one more prediction at the end of it all who is sitting on the Iron Throne. Is going to be at Dawson because you've got John who you know that if I had male heir yeah true true true and yes who is me declared Queen Yup and in order for you to make good on the king and queen you have to you know Ok so you're thinking that maybe they'll marry. I'm thinking that they will connect Mary I don't know if you know that's a card that's a brother or sister. Whatever listen they're only auntie and nephew so that's when you turn around and think about it. Then there is just trying to reunite and gain control of the 17 dumps she's trying to do that whereas John Stark. John Stoll is the last remaining true heir. So when you look at it and the way it's the way the story that is going is really reunification. To both of them reunite. I have a couple ideas Mark and all I got to say about that is if we can have cruise crews in Connecticut can't they have to guarantee our Garion. They do I mean our 1st. Status means it would be easy it sort of roping talent from the movies to potentially expect like a Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston Now he's already doing a Loki show but they can give their voices far less time than appearing on a screen and Marvel's been expanding its T.V. Got his hammer. This is that story. Thor often shared his adventures with his half brother Loki the god of mischief but because Loki was the way he was and frequently caused unnecessary problems and spoiled things the Thunder God often preferred to go off on his own and get into trouble by himself especially with Johns and then fight his way out one day the 2 gods had arranged to depart for the land of the elves and see what adventures could be had there but Loki was late thaw fed up with waiting for the crafty one who was always late for everything decided to teach Loki a lesson and left without him crashing through the skies in his great chariot drawn by his magical Rams Loki arrived just in time to see Thor departing over the horizon and was both highly annoyed and offended that the fun to God had not waited for him that night Loki sat at home drinking meat and dark wines brooding on what 4 had done he went to bed half drunk and tossed and turned all night scheming and planning some way to be revenged on for that would not be too dangerous in his heart of hearts he was truly scared of the red haired Thunder God for he had seen him out wrestle Giants and knocked down an oak tree with a single blow of his mighty fist so although he wanted revenge he did not want to direct the anger for since that was a very dangerous thing to do the night wore on and the god of mischief would think of nothing suitable and the lack of a definite plan made it impossible for him to close his eyes and go to sleep a few hours before dawn the wary God kicked off the bed covers and dressed deciding to go for a walk to help him to think more clearly. As he wandered through the moonlit streets beneath the twinkling of a 1000000 stars the womb night and caressing his face he felt increasingly discontented and vindictive any other god would have been relaxed by the heady purview of the night air filled as it was with the sense of roses Jasmine Myrtle and a dozen other subtle aromas the beauty of as God beneath the moonlight should have taken away all his cares and filled his heart with joy but it only gave him a worse headache he wandered aimlessly through the streets of as God and without intending to go there he eventually found himself outside thaws Palace such is often the way with evil it finds a way to happen without apparently trying now Loki had not gone there on purpose but seeing an open window in the apartments of the goddess if Thor's wife he decided to climb up the ivy which grew on a trail is outside the window and break into the thunder gods home the evil one began to smile as he scaled the wall feeling sure that a suitable act of vengeance would occur to him once he was inside as he entered thought and sifts bedroom by the open window he was rubbing his hands with glee imagining the mischief he could do all fours away once inside the bed chamber he crept around in the dark silently as a cat he's greedy malicious gaze running over everything the room contained looking for something to steal or break spoil or hide that would cause discord in Thor's life as he scanned the room his eyes stopped on the sleeping figure of the goddess if. The silver moonlight illuminated the great bed where she slept and where it fell on her flowing mane of long blonde hair all golden waves and ring let's image before Loki's eyes began to shimmer had he had to clap his hands over his mouth and bend forwards to stop himself from laughing out loud intoxicated body or desperately of the idea that it occurred to him and perhaps a little drunk with his own daring the mead the dark wine and the moonlight he went to the goddesses dressing table and picked up a pair of golden scissors that lay there then he approached the bed quickly and quietly and all the while exulting in the sheer badness of what he was doing the evil one began lopping off sifts beautiful golden head. At 1st he had only intended to take a little and perhaps plant the seeds of jealousy in the thunder God's mind but he was carried away by the pleasure he got from letting his man is free and forgetting all thought of any reprisals that might result from his actions shared the beautiful goddess intil she was as bold as an egg However the god of mischief got too wrapped up in what he was doing and before he knew it the sky in the East was beginning to glow orange for the return of the sun safe began to mutter in her sleep and shift her position slightly stuffing the cut hair hurriedly into his shirt Loki made a hasty exit fearing that she was going to awake and catch him in the act as Loki clambered out of the bedroom window and down the back side of the house one of his sandals came off and dropped into a bush once on the ground he made a rapid search for it but fearing that he would be caught at the scene of the crime as day began to break he was forced to leave without finding it he hurried off running through thoughts garden into the nearby woods disappearing before dreaming see if awakened. Lookee got back home hit sifts and his mattress and knocked his door then climbed into bed closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep contentedly chuckling it is cleverness. His slumber did not last long. And when stiff awoke his screams and wailing awoke heart of as God and just happened to coincide with Thor's return the Thunder God was absolutely furious to discover what had been done to his wife who for her part was weeping inconsolably completely and able to understand what to be done to her and why. Now Dawes wife Nona came running to see what the cause of all the commotion was spotted Nokia's fall and sandal and picked it up on the way to into the house. When full of so and he recognized it as Nokia's at once because it had been stitched with gold and silver threads on like the plain leather out of the typical as gaudy and sandals and he almost exploded. This time it's going to follow I will snap him in to break his arms and I talked to him limb from limb out crushed every down in his body. But Sif was even angrier than and shouted at her husband. A lot of good that will do you dunderhead 6 it won't get me my head back will it look at me like one of the board vultures of little ham and it's on your fault 6 you has got you know for to something. The startled thought had never seen it safe so angry and he stormed out of his house the fun that began to roll in the sky over as God and the folks of jagged lightning flashed angrily as their masters struggled to control his rage. Thor kicked down the door of Loki's house and burst into the bedroom dragging the bleary eyed and instantly terrified mischief maker out of bed wasting no time he slammed him into a wall shaking him like a terrier does a rat roaring you miss but ducklings Suppan spawn eels slime cut duck when you're done with my wife's hair I'm going to tell you into little pieces and feed you to the crowds had it not been for Loki's Good Wife Seguin pleading and begging the founder God not to murder her husband he might have choked the life out of him there and then and saved everyone a lot of heartache in the future but the knowns we have a tangled web as for gripped Loki's neck in one great hand and Seguin hung on his right arm besieging him not to strike Loki with the great makes like fist the half strangled Loki had the seconds he needed to react and managed to begin to wheedle and beg for mercy Loki was a superb actor and as his life was in danger he put on a must of a performance of being repentant swearing never to do anything ever again to offend thoughts save and to make good the damage done in a shameful display of winching cowardice he begged thaws pardon salt tears streaming down his face great heaving sobs who racking his frame sobbing like a baby Loki wailed it was the dark wind of your time high before. I never drink it normally it may be drunk or hard to remember what I did I would never do anything to offend you or yours half brother you know my best friend I'm so sorry believe me please to not kill me yet for though I surely deserve it you will leave good Seguin without a husband or my children without a father but please let me make amends before I die for the terrible things I have done excuse followed apology and remorse flowed in equal measure with good intentions as Loki did everything in his power to make thought withhold the final blow there was great I shook as his reason ward with his passion nor the time Seaghan pleaded with him to spare her husband he's my Lord spare him it was a stupid drunken joke that went too far the thing he didn't realize what he was doing is not really pat he would never have heard the lady said he loves me oh please create for her give him a chance to put right the wrong he has done to you fearing that this time he had really gone too far Loki began to cajole and try to appease the furious Thunder God saying listen Thor it will be all right I can fix everything that I'll go to the dwarves and get them to make a hairpiece of the finest spawn to see if even more beautiful than our own hair until it grows back as she can keep it of course and I'll get them to make magical gifts for my brother Friday I'll get them to make something special for you to us the I Will everything will be all right you'll see trust me I'll make right with you fighting to control his rage for when thaw got angry it was not like an ordinary God's anger he could not just switch it off but had to release it somehow the Thunder God shook Seguin free of his arm and sent a fist like a hand crashing towards Loki's head. The god of mischief shut his eyes and heard a terrifying crash he opened his eyes and saw force for just about his shoulder the thunder God's fist was buried up to the wrist in one of the solid oak that held up the wall outside in the garden and lightning bolt had blasted Loki's favorite cherry tree splitting it into and setting it on fire foals I see blue eyes stead into Loki's impenetrable black ones and he growled softly through clenched and grinding teeth. You have one week half Prada one week to make good your promises if not I will come looking for you and not all the tears in creation will save you from your own doing. Releasing the Gospel gnocchi and leaving him rubbing his bruised throat the thunder guard storm down. Low and. Now Loki had had such a shock that he did not even stop to have breakfast he dressed quickly and set off immediately to try and put things right changing into a hole and flying full speed to survive out of a high in the land of the dark elves Fortunately for him Loki had a debt to call in for favors he had done for a band of elves known as the sons of evolve so he went to them and asked them to prepare a hit piece of the finest gold for Frey and gifts worthy of the gods as well as being great Smiths and metal workers these dark elves were skilled in working gold and had considerable magic powers too and in a couple of days produced 3 wondrous gifts. Sifts had peace was a miraculous thing spun from the finest golden threads finer than the spider's web and it shimmered and Sean like the sun when it moved for Odin the dwarves created the magical spear going near which would always hit its target and return to his hand when throne and for Frey they made a dragon ship called Skid blade that would always find fair winds when it set sail but which would shrink in size so that he could pick it up and put it in his pocket whenever he was not using it once he saw these things Loki regain his usual cheeky confidence and forgot about his promise to make a special gift to for he put the headpiece in the ship in a leather sack and picked up the spear and bit the dwarves farewell as he walked whistling then with a spring in his step through the subterranean tunnels whether dwarves and elves live he passed by the forge of Brock and Cindy 2 brothers whose renown as Smith's was legendary Brooke was standing in the doorway smoking a pipe and as Loki drew near he greeted him hello locate a fine spirit you carry that been chopping of you want to go out in that bag the curiosity of the Dwarves was legendary too and each was always keen to know what their brothers and cousins were getting up to so Loki was not taken aback by Brooks' inquisitiveness and it was feeling so pleased with himself that he began to boast in his usual arrogant way saying hello Brock as it is rather a splendid spare isn't it people say you and your brother of the finest Smith since Fatah Haim but I bet my head that even you 2 could make anything as good as what I have got in these bank. Now Loki said this without thinking but really should have been more careful because among the Dwarves and the elves betting is taken rather seriously and no sooner were the words out of Loki's mouth than broke knocking out his pipe said Dan I'll take that bet Loki's heyday. That would be something to talk about now wouldn't it hey you're a real gods it stepping inside the threshold of the forge he shouted sentry stoke up the fire there's work to be done a challenge bet loci his wages his hate that we cannot outdo the gifts he carries Then turning to the dumbstruck god of mischief broke rubbing his hands and smiling said come on in Loki You can watch us work and when we finished we'll go to ask God and the gods can decide which is the best work out of a good crack won't it prevent I don't think our work is better than what you carry in the bag we'll make a gift of it to you but if they do then we'll cut off your head and bring it back here. Let's get cracking. Loki could have kicked himself and wished that he had bitten his tongue before speaking Odin help him if these 2 brothers were as good as they were said to be. Brock the guy and pumping the bellows to heat up the coals of the forge and Cindy began to prepare a huge dose of. Lumps of coal. And lining up a host of strange tools the like of which Nokia never seen before. The 2 brothers soon became immersed in what they were doing and did not notice that the for long the coffee Nokia disappeared. As the crucible of war heated up and reached Melting Point syndrome via some strange crimson liquid and caffeine mixed in a few drops in the white hot gold. Then when the gold was glowing with a red tinge to radiance he took a pig's skin and shouting to his brother to keep on pumping the bellows he began to pour the liquid gold into the pigskin brink began to curse and swear as he worked the bellows for a huge gadfly had flown into the forge and stung him on the neck drawing blood but he did not let him stop him from pumping the bellows Cindy then took a huge pair of pincers and moved the gold filled pigskin away from the forge and poured a vial of blue liquid on it there was a tremendous hissing sound and the pigskin glowed red white then purest gold and then Incredibly it was no longer a pig skin but a living golden bore the began to walk around the forge sniffing at the. Cindrich clapped his hands and laughed shouting delightedly one of my list just what we wanted isn't the beautiful the gods will love it where they will call him golden Basti that's a good name isn't it. To make the 2nd magical treasure Cindy took a special Ivan and placed it in the hottest part of the forge and began spinning it round and round singing gold that melts gold that spins gold that foam 8 gold rings flows on grows and shines and wins do it now as Cindy sings broke Meanwhile pumped on the bellows for all he was worth knowing that the temperature had to be kept high this crucial stage but the vicious gadfly had returned and stung him right on the cheek he shook his shaggy oversized wharfs head but could not release his grip on the handle of the bellows to swat the evil insect because the magic would be spoiled and he had to gritty his teeth as the wicked stinger had dug into his face and blood trickled down over his grey bearded chin eventually just before the oven stopped spinning they got a fly cease tormenting broke and flew away into the darkness of the cave Cindy removed a special from the forge and took out a beautiful golden ring which he named dropped near the gold drama for every 9 days 8 more identical golden rings were dropped from it for the final treasure Cindy brought ion to make a war Hamma dropping it into a special cast and telling Brock to keep the heat as high as possible while the long suffering broke pumped away on the bellows that got Fly which was really the god of mischief Loki trying to sabotage the dwarves efforts in order to keep his head on his shoulders reappeared and this time stung the unfortunate Brock right in the eye determined and stubborn no block was the pain was more than he could stand and for a couple of vital seconds he dropped the handle of the bellows to swat away the tormenting insect. Cindrich quickly ran to the forge and taking a pair of large iron tongs removed the war Hama casting his expert I over it as he tutted and shook his head and muttered it looks like no harm was done except for the handle it's shorter than it ought to be now but what's done is done we were lucky there brother we could have had a disaster on our hands as he finished speaking Loki stepped out of the shadows smirking and said to Brock well all finished army my mind broke that I looks nasty what happened it's something sting you might get that seemed to if I were you. Fine All right then let's get going. It's a fair truck Duran's God So gathering up their treasures Loki in the 2 dwarf brothers set off as God to have their work judged by the gods when they reached as God all the gods assembled in the Great Hall of Valhalla to have a good look at what they brought Loki offered his gifts 1st handing over the spear going near to Odin the golden head to thaw and the enchanted ship skid plate to fray the god seemed well pleased with what he had brought them and he felt confident that he would keep his head but then broke began to hand over what he and his brother had made explaining the secrets of each gift to each God in turn he gave Odeon the ring dropped near which assured its owner of eternal wealth and to Frey he gave the golden boar Glenn Basti pointing out that he could transport a rider over sea or Sky by day or night faster than any normal steed and moreover by night its golden glow would illuminate the way for its rider the final gift was the short handled hammer which he presented to force saying. Oh great thaw I give you a weapon worthy of the God of Thunder the Hamma mall near. Me only it cannot be broken and will shatter at anything you choose to hit and after it strikes its target it will return flying to your hand one last thing it has such a short handle that you can carry it inside your shirt if you wish should you have a need to conceal it Loki was furious that the crafted Warford made a virtue out of the little defect he had caused in the enchanted weapon and began to get nervous about what the God's decision might be finally after much comparing and consulting Odin announced his decision declaring the hammer home there to be the most useful gift and the ideal weapon for thought to use in his battles with the Giants and he confirmed that the Dwarves had won the bet Loki protested furiously but to no avail and then offered to pay a forfeit But Brock was adamant that only the head of the trickster would satisfy the terms of the wager and the god of mischief panicked grabbed a pair of wings sandals he kept handy for emergencies and sped off running over land and sea to escape his doom but for who was still angry with Loki and indebted to the dogs for his new hammer chased after him and caught him in a trice bundling him into a net so that he would not be able to escape again and then brought him back to face the grim faced broken syndrome as Brock took a huge shop battleaxe and came towards Loki to chop his head off Cindy made him kneel on the big wooden chopping block where the gods cut their firewood. In a last desperate attempt to save his neck the screaming Loki invoked his blood oath with Odin and protested that since the wager had only referred to his head the dwarves could only take it if they could do so without harming his neck which was not part of the bet even though the guards felt Loki's argument to be somewhat twisted because of his oath of blood without in they decided to back him up and insisted that if Brock wanted to take Loki's head he must do so without hurting his neck Brock and Cindy realized they were being cheated but Brock in particular still smarting from the sting of the Gadfly was determined that if he could not have the mischievous ones head he would at least still his wagging tongue before returning to saddle for Hi I'm Cindy gave him a long strand of leather like a boot lace and his magical needle and broke stitched the God of mischiefs lips together much to the amusement of the other gods Thor in particular it took Loki months to unpick the level strand from the holes in his lips and for a long time after that he was unable to talk because his lips hurt so much which kept everyone happy for as long as it lasted. And they have the story. Well Thor got his hammer. And that was told by Benjamin Soames the notes from Tales of the Norse legends as retold by Edward Ferrie and not Max also audiobooks from Germany. Yes now that we're here I wonder what that's related to it seems like I don't really notice any injuries. For the center so at age 60 at the they just aren't in sync as they probably should be as careful again lines of Shaka on 35 yard line both 30 able to nice pick up a nice pass up the middle kingdom for 34 for the Oregon State be very able to park about 30 yard line that with Galen talking on the the tackle nothing easy and sitting here there's still 7 minutes to play they're down 17 when they get on the board get a template game so to position game with what seems to be the 54 minutes so clock will be taking about as good as he cares in and his receivers start to connect more often and that'll be Ryan now on the reception that will be if you keep your feet and again the character lining up in the shotgun definitely seemed that much to you so far today as you actually have to see the passing so much day as he looks number 8 he at least the past offended by kook out bears that will be killing markets again on the reception has been absolutely bender for cow Yeah you know it's it's it's unfortunate that they're stunned and aired out this lately game because in Istanbul economy in a stronger shouldn't they should have opened up the earlier in the game not only because ill help him out he'll get more comp is that a little bit of the wrong in that they love to use. Either the Red Sox hockey still taken $658.00 to play fair to get the shocker that fans hand off to that old takes himself and he gives a few yards on that play a strong and not effective tackle back who Nashik the passing was not one bit on that take. I think you read that all the way. I mean I would have a chance for if so good I could ask that you watch his. Watch the way and order of things with 3 of 31. Long today it's 3rd hand from the 13th they need a touch They're here to keep themselves in it you know that you know a big house a 733 possession game story and they will be the store. And he got back to pass by and it was a little bit of early contact by the county man but not called and the. Timmy Hernandez will miss it will get the credit it with the market but a misplaced and a real bill coming out defended by Cameron Fina on the play for you and 10 from the 13 so this will be a 38 yard field goal 28 arguable I'm sorry that you can decide on another one play out of I saw. Him being the weekend the big kick today has to be a chip shot. And that kick is a good 31 yard field goal for 2 car has a couple of pens if you guys to career long today and that will be a t.v. a half way in the 4th quarter I'd take it off. And gave it back to return the one man has a lot of room we will be at the head at the cornea brought there at the 20. You know Ashton Oh I see stayed on his feet appears to be began to come here yards maybe he did not hit the turf but actually days after the 24 inches the other really seems like these mission right here though for him standing in a cliff 3 and out may preserve for 5 minutes on the clock by themselves down to score you punching one maybe look for an onside later don't say never say never and . I mean you could argue that Cal maybe was except expecting the onside kick there but I thought you know it's too early for that you can't give cow the chance to score again so obviously Oregon State was going to go I think Oregon state obviously made the right oh and went for the Kick It Out. Because that happened earlier today in the series in Florida State game when Syracuse went. 30 percent long they mention that. I was with watching that before I came over here as a handoff to Patrick Laird only gave out a yard but in the insurgency started a game I should mention. They decided to onside kick it figuring they had to give them 2 chances to get the ball back rather than the one so you know certainly a good but a good play call that you're going to be reasonable better to play it safe and then the 2nd an 8 now with the ball on the 22nd 22nd the 22. Funny 2nd Yeah like I already know it as Barry's lines up in the shotgun trying to run time now trying to run time off the clock. That delivers a handoff you had declared which immediately brought down about to reargue 8 that'll be minus a one Galu on the tacky decision time fatality wanted to put it on the ground but unless you've got a whole lot to play or do you want to know call it a try to get the 1st 5 minutes stopping before. I mean that that's always the total struggle right to you you probably just try to get up 1st and give Oregon State chance to get the ball back or do you try to run out of a pocket again I mean obviously I think that it's Ok if we're going to get the ball back I don't think that I don't think you've seen the ability to speak us down that you need Morgan State so I think that you hand it off right again but Cal disagrees drop back to Patty throw easy throw to catch with Larry able to pick up who doesn't get the 1st down and looks like he may carry out the rest of the roll if it appears that they're moving the chains for that will be a 1st down for the Cal Perry that was here a l.f. Passing last set again many yards rushing it out I grabbed a less time to get in touch play out on the pass and there we go we got this like 7 yards needed to get the front down off and go get better blared able to pick up a much needed 1st down to bring to give Cal a new set of downs and probably finish off the game out of it huge organs they could get the ball back right there as various lines up. Able to get the handoff hands off as a player and has declared not able to do anything again gain of roughly 0 and that didn't last like a good upon their cash legacies don't get back up no good tackle by Monaghan Galu on the tackle right there able to bring down the hatches made yet again. And that'll be. The end. Now the time out for an update on some clocks here after they are to give us the 1st down so see a tough situation right I mean you have to use your big pull your play to win for your only win condition is if you could stop Cal here get the ball back within you know let's say 3 minutes right you get the ball back 3 minutes of the clock you have to score quick you have got a minute a half before that but the other bit of a hassle and you have about a minute before your final touches you know you the whole day can ask you a question here for sure you know you're a man of numbers here and a little got what it wanted to pursue the win told the win percentage but organized a looking like but as you have. Yet to throw out a number Well I mean you know in the situation it's lasted you know it's about 2 to 3 percent if that but you know if it happens it happens a lot but you know you're right we see some crazy comebacks but let's not seen the memorial thing today right I doubt we'll see one today as Barry heads up so they're getting get him mediately stopped for a gate 3 again Monday on Galu on the back of a leading actor for this or against a team Yeah one of the things that's flashing back to me actually is Oregon State again sad for the ladies and last week Oregon State I mean this girl is a lot closer but Oregon's they was up I believe they were up 6 at that point with about 334 minutes left exactly the point that we are right now and Ryan they were kind of run out the clock and Ryan ball from ball that Stafford recovers at that allowed I believe the court staff are sort of like him as the Christ he was a brain the team down the office looked terrible throughout the whole game but they were able to get the game winning touchdown left behind of speaking of Stanford and Oregon State narrow loss there we'd like to remind you that it 2 weeks Calyx will be live from Palo Alto to broadcast the Cal Stanford the big game the 129th redemption. Something like that very the lot of a lot of British of the big game some of them were rugby some of them were football and. Some of them were you know we've got so you know we'd like to remind you to come with true did you callus for that game we don't like to remind you that the Rose Bowl Cal will be playing down there in l.a. 3 weeks from u.c.l.a. Who had a loss last night. That was a neck of the score. A blowout by the way for you but was close at halftime and I tried hard enough but it ended up being 4817 for you to think it was 1717 or 7010 at halftime but we'll get back to action now after an injury timeout for the starting nose tackle for Oregon State. As ours lined up ready to receive the shot grads of in the shotgun ready to receive the snap a little bit of some movement on the line we're just waiting to get started here another interesting tidbit is Cal Cal with not to their car stunts probably today unfortunate lack of attendance on the Cowboys as a false start appears to be the impact and that's another penalty yet again $167.00 combined penalty yards 99 on Ohio State and 63 on Cal I don't have a stake I keep the o.s.u. But Oregon State 99 percent of the art in Oregon State 63 on Cal Cal gun by the 1st down penalties alone I was eager to play oh how say there's like what 2013 flyback haven't we want that move right. Holy Shit Be careful Lismore a. That was out I was a day I remember a lot of a scalp and were cheering that during the Ole Miss game after they were 1st place Bama next week and the next week and they ended up getting mightily b. Which is this cow Bears team unfortunately would probably be by the Alabama time will once again see Teles after Teles once again a 3rd in a mile situation well they're in the lead in the right data but in long situations and calloused for the day is open to on 3rd and long conversion you know when you're at the start of a long time they were never going to have a good type trying to convert it's always difficult to convert the saw yardage situation and you know that will give Oregon State some well back if Cal does not convert here so interesting to see what Cal go for because if they run it they'll be able to waste a clock but if they pass it and it's incomplete they'll use up as they decide to run it with such a player who is able to fight a Hebraic hackle able to get yours and the l.t. To put him over $200.00 yards on the day and that will be fun if they have to always. Have. Till today so what impressed me particular over 200 rushing us on that day right we talked about right now or had a big big game last time last year when calculating in Corvallis Wells County starting right or super today with Patrick Laird getting over 200 yards today. Yes You 114 yards 33 can't touch them right after the touch and it's often sublime. As powers lines up in the shotgun this game is all but over head to pick and wary who is able to dye forward for a gain of about 3 hours. First where I was pretty much puts the game away it certainly puts the game away if not the game had been away for a couple of minutes now but you know that that is not that huge right now did a brand new player basically gave Cal the with you know a behind the back of his 214 yards that's that's going to be the big fortune by Cal probably going to win this game barring a epic comeback I think they're I think they're in the clear is his tennis left. To possession game in Calif you never you never like to say that never like to say that you put me on the record for that I said on bare Tucker this week for those yellows and I predicted that cow would with my double digits I'm going to learn but they're controlling the ball and usually of credit is off it's of line of play phenomenal today rock stars when needed has played great today by me like to hope that count could it could be that Oregon State they showed they could get Oregon stadium if the result hold will drop a one in 8 and 4 will drop to 5 and 5 and probably get themselves into possibility of a ball contention as a great head off the Packers because very able to see 1st down. Fall out about the $42.00 yard line Pavel by home market so he'll probably that's the end of the farm . To clarify some of us say That's all I'm going to step on of that but great effort by the cat at 145 I'm if I'm Cal Right now I'm trying to get my my back up some playing time I think the now it's just in case somebody gets injured you want to make sure your guys are pretty ready maybe get chased far throw but you know it's a tight thing where you'd like to be you know your Cal Bear is doing it you know doing the you know there's going to run out the clock another run to make it wary able to go 5 yards I know pretty much be it you know that's going to be the case for Cal Perry what do you think the key to count success was today I think Evan I think it was a running in a town of the ball this is an organ state the fact that gives it a ton of points and gives up a ton of yards however has been different under this new Arrow scoring hole to get over steal steal change overnight it can be a process to them but the Duc De Kalb came out and they did lead a simple game one of my keys the week that I mentioned earlier on their talk was you just got to play mistake free football while they do have mistakes they still ran the ball incredibly well yeah stuff though I hope for me I was one of those games where you want to Kalispell rushing game that we actually didn't or you say I believe it's probably lasted only a and rushing defense so that's one of the keys that doubtless Rusty that's exactly going to be able or like a particular go and fortunately I think Larry was cut out of the picture throughout the whole game but we really needed I think that we don't need only of Patrick legs right I mean that's and that's that's what you like to see that you like to see your best players doing well as Cal lined up in the victory formation. Of rush hours of little stutter step before going down on one knee you know able to you know that that would be it pretty much for Cal you know I think the big impact was again i Player that rushing game read up counts for the passing game a cow able to get a boat load of your. That we said at half time was half way to 48 hours today $23.00 of 434260 yards 3 touchdowns pick Warton with want to catch one of them and be catching the other player and begin where you each had a name in the top. Welcome back to Berkeley you're listening to 90.7 f.m. To pay out x. Your home for Cal sports My name is there Tapper I'm joined by Kevin Lynn a national meant for your post game show The California Golden Bears defeated the Oregon State Beavers by a score of 372238 big win to move Couch to 5 and 5 on the Season 2 and 5 intact 12 and 108 for the Oregon State Beavers and 0 and 6 in Pac 12 play. This is been a great game you know Carol obviously with 475 yards compared to Oregon State 299 cal had 259 passing yards compared to 195 for the Beavers and 104 yards for the beavers on the ground compared to 216 Cal rushing yards behind Patrick Laird So guys what do you think was the big impact for today what you think how did right what do you think counted wrong and what do you want to see moving you know what you think other big takeaways from this game yeah I know they know I'm right off course everyone's going to say the rushing game you know Patrick Laird coming back with 214 yards then we also had the passing game as well we had Vick working with over 100 yards overseeing which is something we haven't seen for quite a while it's the wild balance office which is really the thing that went right for today's game and it was really awesome and see that going forward for the bad to be quite honest the whole thing about giving up those big balls of plays or you say only attempted it once they were able to complete that I'm surprised that Oregon State didn't try to avoid it like how Colorado did last week but we were we saw the same holes on the 2nd day they were able what at the game but we were we still fog with that so this is something I want to see us well during the bye week and this is something that will be key when we play Stafford in 2 weeks no yeah I definitely I'm going to be the guy who thinks that it's the obvious. Rushing at any particular 214 yards not only in an insane amount of yards but if you saw the way he ran and he ran tough he ran through the holes all day he has great vision he has great feet he was able to balance selling needed to do so and not only that as Kevin mentioned it is also is that balance came because we saw the 1st time in a while where he had a a turnover list game for him he's prone to throw in turnovers and Ross Bowers the type of guy when things are rolling from their role and really well when things are looking down and you start to see more and more mistakes so I think the idea of the fact that we're able to attack with this running game that was just ferocious today and the fact Iraq powers didn't throw any interceptions that's used those those are static categories that winning the game when you look at just the simple football stack category right I think that I my big takeaway from today is I think Ross Barrett had a great performance 24 for 3260 yards and 2 touchdowns that's what you want to see out of your passer The only really incomplete passes he had were those that he threw away so you know when you see that when you have players that are you know as as dominant as rough ours was today you know that's the type of player you want to see you know defensively we had some great performance as well Evan Weaver with his 9 tackles that's something you don't really see very often from the we'll buy back or you know but speaking of which the probably the player of the game with the fence was gonna say I'm dollars from Oregon State to him when he tackles for. They didn't have much talk about their dad but he played really really really well but my big problem with the cow bears today with the 768 penalty are you know we talk about Oregon State 100 penalty yards on 9 penalties but the real problem for me with Cal can't get away with set with 68 yards the penalties when you have that many penalty yards regardless of which team you are you're going to struggle to win football games with Cal had some issues earlier in the game you know going into the bye week going into Stanford in 2 weeks these are going to be big things that we know we need to watch out because we keep having somebody. Stand for team in. Going to be tough to beat and we need to make sure that we can you know this is a cow work out best chances at a big game in years and I think that Cal have a good shot at winning that game what you guys have and what do you think that. Needs to do what are your keys moving forward for the rest of the season for Stanford you feel. I completely agree with what you say about limiting turnovers I think that's going to be huge if you want to be of course that which is the team we have the longest time and I say this every year but this is probably one of our best chance to win with that great the fact we need to keep it clean you know that I hope he's going to have a good game but of course we see still growing and not having the best office at a time so we need to make sure we have a good defense. That we saw a smile today and we want to win that turnover battle which by the way I want to be a 1st went without winning the turnover battle so that's something for with I just all the best I could very well yeah you know for me it really comes down to the quarterback but quarterbacks have a big dictator on a teen obviously they dictate how well an office can play and also can parlay into how our defense plays because interception situation I mean I just can't stop raving about how long we need to tell play him every week he's a really streaky player and we know a particular going to get his butt to go get his When we open up the running game by passing the ball and it works and we run the ball well the Paschim opens up so when the turnover battle that's another thing that we really need to work at and that's something that we've been really good at we led the nation for a while I don't know if we still are in terms of turnovers but in terms of these this Stanford u.c.l.a. And they're both they're both road games they're going to come back to back to Stanford probably the one that you named for more to win because it's right here right across the bay not too far you're still in somewhat of your homeland territory and you're coming have to prepare for that so. I'm going right to work tomorrow because I want to make a bowl game in my 1st year right now. I think that that's the big thing you know if Cal can beat Stanford of Cal can be u.c.l.a. Company one of them the Cal will be a ball this is much quicker a much quicker rebuild than anybody expected this really this was supposed to be a 3 a 9 to a 10 team is because we've gone to Cal's only win for the season and this could just be the icing on the cake with the nice cow you know I'd be nice to Cal beating Stanford for the 1st time I believe in 7 to 8 years and in 7 years which would be great you know that's something you would like to see if your account then so with that we will take it back to Barrows hall and back to the couch d.j. a Couple quick notes Congratulations to Matt Anderson on breaking the record for the all time leading point scorer the cow also 380 now in their last 3 senior days so a great performance to send out the seniors on a high and a shout out to our men in studio jackets and a shout out to our sideline reporter the sideline of us Sam Weissman some great performance by both of you guys to keep the show on board so my name is Derek topper This is Kevin Calyx k Alex Berkeley 90.7 I'm with Kevin Lane and then Solomon and will sign out to give you guys the next galaxy to thank you for this thing and. Who performed at the u.c. Theater last night and projected behind them which was somewhat nostalgic actually some of those had in fact projected at the u.c. Theater. Long long ago in the mists of ancient mill and. It is 533 in the late afternoon early evening which means it's time for. Them. And we are going to be talking about a variety of films fictitious documentary. Fictional narrative. Be that way. Here for the next hour probably going to have some items of free stuff as well. Where shall we begin shall we start with. We get the Hollywood. Sure yeah. We're talking about the war rag in Iraq that's. The latest Marvel film but I directed by Tycho as he. Starring all the usual suspects of the 4 movies Chris Hemsworth Tom Hiddleston and interest. In the Hopkins but we're adding to the mix. Mark Ruffalo as the hole and Cate Blanchett lunch as our villain Hello. And also Tessa Thompson as Val Curry and Carl Urban is in there as well a little appearance from Benedict Cumberbatch p.s. Also some really amazing. And take I have to take a what T.V.'s good luck charm Rachel House also shows up she's in oh yeah with the exception of what we do in the shadows. But we're there and you were was that's really the question you know there were there were rock monsters. Played by Tyco a teabag for exactly right himself probably the scene stealing role of the film Ragnarok monsters Yeah. Story Actually I'm not. So for a superhero movie it's pretty straightforward it's they have to stop riding a rock but they you know or get stuck on a planet called so car which is ruled by Jeff Gold Blum who's playing the grandmaster but he's essentially playing Jeff Gold bloom and caution him and that's what they did they literally said we cast him because we wanted Jeff Goldblum to play himself and he gets to be funny and charming and play piano so. What did the light for film it was it was a lot of very funny and funny and. And some surprises in there that you know but I'm sure that you should not give away Yes Exactly yeah so be be prepared for surprises and it's it's a very. Very eighty's feel to it Mark Mothersbaugh does the music that helps contribute to a resurgence of interest in the eighty's Yeah by people who weren't even necessarily born in the eighty's and they I mean they're there or their parents you know talked about it a lot and so they wanted to which ironically I was going to say Stranger things ironically I like chords a little sidekick Mick kind of looks like a rejected Demogorgon from stranger thing right. Oh yeah yeah yeah but with like night farms. Yeah. So yeah Thor gets waylaid on this planet's a car where he has to face Jeff Goldblum's grand champion who is. The whole yes if you've seen the trailer you already know you know. Sort of or gladiators sort of thing Thor was captured by a balcony he does not know that he is part of the Val Curry troupe of women who used to. Help Odin. Defend as guard and. Something happened to them when they fought the 1st time and she has been living on so car for some time after that sad event. And. Yeah it's a it's a very fun movie and I'm glad that they finally got to weigh. Chris Hemsworth cut loose a lot more. Because while he is a obviously a very good looking man he is very funny he is the only good thing about that vacation movie that came out a couple years ago that they tried to redo National Lampoon Vacation. And he stole the show and Ghostbusters so he gets to be kind of slightly down. Or. But very charming and you know gags like stuck on a chain and he's talking to. His Co prisoner Yeah. But I was going to say that the person who has him captured searcher and searchers trying to explain how he is going to come and do. You know he will bring Ragnarok to as guard the their version of the apocalypse and as he's giving this grand speech. Thor is kind of swinging around yeah very slowly on this chain that one point he is has his face away from him and he's like Wait wait wait stop Don't don't talk to me I'm not I'm not facing you we're having a moment. So you'll get some of these obvious gags like that. And capitalizing on whole being stuck in Bruce Banner being stuck in his whole conform so he gets to act like a big 4 year old and yeah I thought there were some also some sweet moments in there you know between the Brother star and and Loki yeah I also saw her and the Hulk Yeah so it was an all ages I think Tiger. Is a master of doing very good with male male friendship and familial relationships what do you see with a hunt for the world or people and what we do in the shadows and boy. He he finds tender moments with the with and kind of deconstruct those typical relationships very interesting ways I guess that was one of my questions going in is how much I mean if you were if you were a director for hire being brought into this gigantic studio machine how much of Tiger Woods he manages to shine through and how much of that just sort of the Marvel imprint. Kind of overlaying any kind of directorial. Nuance there's still some Marvel stuff going on and I feel like the most Marvel is when they have the fights and when Dr string shows up for a minute yeah but all those stuff and so cars all like eighty's looking it's and it's very Guardians of the galaxy looking but it's kind of weird it's even weirder than guardians almost and it's nice that Marvel is letting them kind of get away with that I almost feel like they didn't really give him too many notes to go off. I like a lot of the stuff that they take seriously like the Infinity stones. They just kind of brushed off like his like bake it like oh now has a gauntlet and he's like No they're fake whatever and like I was tough so find the stones and couldn't find him like and then we move along to his story so you know there's some Marvel stuff in there but. I feel like they got to a tie could be tighter and I like the Korg is very obviously like has a Kiwi accent and he based it off of specifically body guards at night clubs in New Zealand. Who are very soft spoken and kind of like hey man calm down kind of you know but they look very big and imposing and they're actually very sweet but can kick your butt if they need to right you know. So. You know all kinds of theaters you listen to on the 17 f.m. Kalends Berkeley we have many items of free stuff that we should probably begin is what you're saying all right I am going to offer up the 1st of several which is a pair of passes to see the film l.b.j. . Staring Woody Harrelson over at the Elmwood Theater here in Berkeley. That's located at 2966 College Avenue at Ashby this is for any showing between men date November 6th through Thursday November 9th it is rated r. And it is potentially wheelchair accessible but you must check with the theater. If you are interested in seeing l.b.j. . Please give us a call 510-642-5259 extension 642 get Alex beyond number this week you don't have to you don't have to pledge anything you know this week you don't get to pledge Yes yes that's. What he said You're listening to and when 7 of him you're like sparkling speaking of the eighty's and it's the renewed interest in the texture of the audience here's a little John Carpenter. in attendance of course not me I mean not naming names or anything here's a list of the film close ups. Moving on to well you want to say that I was a mess here I mean who surely be playing Lost themes but do you think you'll be playing any found things though I think oh you will enable me some established themes that are going to be in their imaginary fictional themes and from what I understand there will also be some some film projection behind which I think will mean it'll probably be calling from the from the filmography so but I don't know we'll find out tonight. I'll report back next week. And. Moving on to faces places. Where I really like the French title I actually like the English title too but that sort of title is sort of a rare instance where the word the the rhyme scheme actually work yeah. This is a new a new film and by Agnes Varda and Jr Jr being a young French I want to call him a street artist or really even a muralist but what he does is sort of a mirror a list he sort of lists and he's a photographer who pastes giant scale photographic images on the sides of buildings and things. And has even down an installation in the Us Mexico border and sort of to prove some points about. That particular border. But yes he's done an interesting he has an interesting body of work for someone of his age this is a little aside but I was the elevator at work the other day and someone was talking at the border wall and took me awhile to realize they were talking about the Mexico u.s. Border wall rather than the ballast on Israel. But that's an interesting connection that I hadn't really thought of before but they were text is important. To Understanding. That this this is a. Charming kind of buddy road documentary. That follows the 2 of them around as they travel around sort of rural areas of France visiting small villages and. Meeting people there and doing making kind of large scale photography murals in the towns that they visit the people who live in those places and it's a way I think for them to connect with new people and to meet new people and feel like a connection between you know. Their lives in the the lives of just sort of every day French citizens or people or residents. But they travel around found in Che ours. Really silly photography truck which is like it's like a food truck except it's a mobile photo booth. And it prints really large scale image is so you can see you can sit in it and have your photo taken like you would in a normal photo booth but it prints out the side of the truck. Like it's a giant Polaroid camera right to these really large sheets of paper and then think of the recent Errol Morris film. Which though the Yeah Yeah. It's a giant Polaroid camera. It is. I mean I don't want to talk too much about the things that they encounter because it's so it's such a charming film that I think all the things that happen in it should be kind of just a delightful surprise to anybody just encountered but their chemistry is so good together and they tease each other about. You know like she she teases him because his sort of signature is. Nobody really kind of like Banksy nobody really knows who he who he actually is he's not like a publicly named figure that he goes by Jr and he wants it he appears everywhere in a hat and sunglasses and she. Gives him grief because Hill he's always wearing sunglasses and for her. She's like you know that's kind of credibly rude to always be you know dealing with people face to face but wearing dark glasses and. So that's kind of a little theme throughout the film as an urgent sort of poking him about the Senate glasses and he you know is like well how is this different from your hairstyle you know. Her very distinctive kind of. But. I mean I just I absolutely love this film I just was delighted from beginning to and and I think it's so rare that you watch a film that immediately after you watch it you're like I really now want everyone I know to go see this so that they can also have a delightful experience in a movie theater that's not necessarily like you know let's let's think about this and you know this is the movie you should analyze. It is just it's charming. It's a charming example of how simple interest you know interest human interactions are are just such a joy to watch and how it really doesn't take complicated interactions to learn about people and to appreciate the differences between people in their lives and. Yeah I mean it it's it's one of the things that I love about it is that the willingness of these people to share their lives with these strangers that are coming through with this funky camera car thing and it just. It's not just saying talking to them they also want to learn about them and also plan things they do you know because there were some portions in there where you know they involved everybody in making decisions in some of these these projects and I thought that that was just really great it's like a sociology on the go kind of thing you know you go to different communities and why you choose that community is also pretty interesting there was a similar truck that was set up in front of a bunch of real on 16th Street and services car probably around a decade ago that I remember that was just basically saying Now anyone who wants to have their photographs or you can just stop in will take your portrait and then they had an exhibit maybe. A month later. All the portraits of the people just happened to be going through the mission at that point and I'm grabbing grabbing a picture and there was the reason I found out the exhibit was actually happening was someone came out and said Yeah I had a burrito right underneath the big picture of you and it was kind of unnerving. But what is here this is doing here. You know my. I'm just trying to enjoy. What I do. But you know that was an interesting kind of and it was kind of strange to just kind of almost relinquish the you know my picture taken Sure why not. You know I'm not feeling particularly photogenic today but yeah Ok whatever and so that I think there's something about these kinds of. Projects that almost because the almost the low keenness of them kind of breaks through the barriers of people's normal reservations or whatever they might have in front of them and just so the being able to pierce that veil in a fairly simple way there's something very humanizing about that and there's there's for this film I think there's also something about you know how you judge people based on just you know what they look like versus what the reality of their life and you know there are definitely characters in this film who are character yeah. You know when you and they fight they find some of the most interesting faces they could possibly find but they also find people who are just an interesting face but also an interesting existence behind that face and they take the trouble to actually go behind the face and find out more about some of the subjects in their film which is really really interesting and it really is very humanizing and very. You know it's like the opposite of of every other thing coming at us in the media it's it's very much like this is a quiet thing but it will make you happy kind of like you know you know there's a word they were. Coming back to our humanity Yeah yeah basically. That was you know what that one person that you probably referencing it was it was kind of a surprise it's like while they actually followed that thread to that point I thought that was really cool. Yeah. It sounds a little bit similar to the gleaners and her film where she's tracking down different things connected with the painting The Gleaners and then. There's one moment in particular where she like encounters a guy who's essentially at the level of vagrancy or near the level of vagrancy which she's been she's been fascinated by at least since vagabond and then she takes a whole you know side trip essentially a whole like down the rabbit hole moment to investigate what his life is you know that seems initially tangential to the cleaners and it has such a great feeling of spontaneity that communicate to the audience the feeling with this this little journey that she's on it's a journey for us you know conveying that you know giving it to us as well that's. That's pretty much how I felt that little portion was yeah yeah and one of the things they also deal with in the film is you know she's 89 she's like she's 88 I think when they're making the film so she's dealing with this loss of vision that she can't just overcome with glasses and part of the film is actually kind of trying to demonstrate how she sees the world now. Verses you know the years and years of you being able to actually see how she sees the world in the right and you know the reality of how she sees the world now and even she is like I want to capture for other people and how what it looks like when I'm looking at this right. That was a pretty poignant moment yeah like my killer degeneration also as he has. It's think about I mean the extreme version of it is very Germans blue where I mean when he's dealing with you know his final is final declining days. It's just it's just pure blue and that was a I'm about that particular film always leaps to mind on the think about filmmakers and loss of vision and how do you represent what what you're what your field of vision looks like you know so this incredible film is currently playing at the Elmwood here in Berkeley It's also over at the Christopher b. Smith Raphael Film Center in San Rafael and at the opera Plaza in San Francisco and it will be a deal is still going to be on the horizon for the p.f.a. In mid December it will have several screenings at the Pacific film archive. So even if you're not able to catch it during this theatrical run which it's been playing at the Elmwood since it lasts. Not this past Friday but the Friday before that since before our previous broadcast and. I'm not sure how long it will run there things are things at the Elmwood are never much liked as week long runs at the Shattuck you don't know they may stay around but you know son you have no idea how long it's going to be there so I advise people to take advantage of seeing this while they have to change sooner than later places places biogas in a variety of theaters you're listening to and 7 of them Berkeley University in the summer sponsored radio this is from close ups and there's more free stuff yes we have another set of tickets for the Elmwood theater this is to see the film Hello again which is actually. Based on and off Broadway musical so it's not I'm not sure if it's an actual film or a filmed perform a national theatre live it's all of them. But it has Audra McDonald in it so it's Ok by and. Her father was my high school principal. This is playing Wednesday November 8th or this is good for Wednesday November 8th through Tuesday November 14th it's a weird set of dates for the Elmwood. It is rated r. And it is as usual not necessarily wheelchair accessible but not necessarily wheelchair accessible exactly give us a call 510-642-6425 extension 259 The film is Hello again at the elm would be color number 2. By what the or why are the center.

I closed the gate behind me and walked towards the house making my way up the few steps to the door I knocked but nobody opened my heart sank I placed my bag on the porch steps and walked back down them and around the house at the front of the property the landscape opened up the violet mountains with a scattering of snow on their peaks lay across the field dense undergrowth surrounded the property on both sides he was standing at the bottom of the garden a long back in a dark blue woollen jumper he jumped when I called out to greet him then lifted a hand and trudged across the yellow gray ground towards me took a deep breath the face and body of a man somewhere in his forty's a man who didn't look as if he were in the slightest need of nursing he was dark and stocky he didn't look me in the eye but instead stead straight past me as he offered me an outstretched hand Siegel Vaga at his head tone I said at least pleasing his large hand nothing in his expressions suggested that he recognized me that he was just a good actor where your bags he said around the back garden behind him was a gray winter tragedy of dead shrubbery sudden straw and tangled rose the kits he caught my worried expression. Yes lots to be taken care of the garden is my wife's Dumain you can see why I need somebody to help out while she's away he showed me up to my room marching up the old staircase it was simply furnished with a narrow bed a chest of drawers and a desk and I scream I said he turned without replying nodded towards my bathroom and walked down the stairs without indicating what was through the other door on the landing I followed close behind him out of the house across the garden and over to the small tool shed. The wooden door creaked as he opened it he pointed at a wall rake shovel crowbar for the long grass you'll need the size if you know how to use it I nodded swallowing he didn't seem particularly bothered about making eye contact as he spoke I was the help it was important to establish a certain distance with any responses to your advertisement I asked quite a few he replied his arrogance seemed put on but I kept my thoughts to myself I was his property now he could do as he liked he straddled a low roar Dion gate rusted shut he said maybe you can do something about it I stepped over the gate and followed him steep stone steps led down to the few would I counted the steps on my way down $100.00 Exactly we arrived at a small stone jetty with a rundown boat house. It's so beautiful out here do you have a boat I asked No he said well there's not much for you to getting on with down here but now you've seen it in any case he turned around and started making his way back up the steps his bedroom is on the ground floor he motioned towards the closed door just past the kitchen he accessed his work crew through his bedroom he told me I spent most of my time in the you won't see much of me and I'd like his few interruptions as possible I don't have a car but there's a bicycle with saddle bags the shop is 2 kilometers north of like breakfast at 8 o'clock at 1 o'clock I have a light lunch dinner is it 6 followed by coffee and brandy after reading off his requirements he disappeared into his work room and I was left to acquaint myself with the kitchen in the fridge I found the card fit that we would have chef a dinner that evening. At 6 o'clock on the dot he emerged from his bedroom and took a seat at the head of the table he waited I placed the dish containing the fish in the middle of the table I was about to sit down when he halted me with an abrupt wave. You read afterwards my mistake perhaps I wasn't clear about that fact I felt a lump form in my throat picked up my plate and quickly moved it over to the kitchen worktop without uttering a word the tall miserable wretch my head bowed when he stood up afterwards thanked me brusquely for the mail and returned to his work cream I took my plate to the table and ate my own lukewarm push and a finish the washing up and headed up to my room I sat there perfectly still and silent afraid to make a sound but eventually I made my way to the bathroom the food turning in for the night the blade on this side must have been blunt I cursed the drooping stalks of wet yellow grass it was overcast the air he would he had got into his wet dream straight after breakfast I started to feel my efforts in my back I continued to swing the blade with all my might I spun around to find bagus standing behind me I'd try the rake if I were you the sides no good when the grass is wet. No I tried my best to muster a smile Don't forget lunch he said and who the way I got stuck at the house the window to his work room he had been standing there staring down at me in disbelief as I ignorantly forged ahead with my attempts at gardening until he could take no more. Shame crept of me. The bicycle was behind the tool shed propped up against the wood stack an old Persia with ram's horn handle by. The cycle to the shop only took 10 minutes it was a small grocery shop the kind of place that time is forgotten an elderly lady station behind the counter watched as I wondered between the half empty rows of shelves there was no mistaking her critical air she knew who I was I felt a not for me inside me plucked a few items from the shelves and place them in my basket I raced home through the forest before stopping my bicycle crunching over the gravel opening the door and making my way through the house something wasn't right about this place it was home to a married couple yet the garden was a neglected mess they owned no car and he locked himself in his what cream all day long his wife away like this I put the shopping away and started preparing dinner on the evening of my 7th day I set down the tray carrying the coffee in the glass of brandy and was about to step back when he held up a hand Alice it was the 1st time I heard him say my name yes fetch an extra cup and a girl come in take a seat I did as he asked you've been here for a week now he said staring down at the edge of the table are you happy here yes would you consider staying a while longer Absolutely thank you. Do you have any idea how long that will be a position for me I'll need help in the house and garden for as long as my wife is away all through spring and summer to begin with that works for me I said he poured brandy into the tiny grass then lifted it in my direction then we should raise a glass I lifted my head and I carefully touched my gas against his it was done I would remain here. I had a place to stay no need to go back I could live out here in peace after a few days of sunshine the garden was beginning to dry out I had finally honed my skills with the sight to now left an aftermath of spiky comes of straw in my wake Occasionally I would glimpse Vaga at the window always in motion so it was impossible to tell if he'd been watching me or simply passing by I returned the tools to the shed and made my way up stairs to my bathroom I filled the tub and slipped into the water scrubbing myself clean of debt and. Uplifted by the new possibilities of my existence good hard work beneath an open sky. I had never thought change was possible not of one's own doing anyway never but now this committing myself to this to work in the garden clearing space making things grow there was salvation to be found I could create a sense of self and which not of the old parts of me could be found I could make myself pure and free from guilt I heard bagus footsteps on the floor downstairs could he be peal from the window of my room I watched him head through the garden disappearing down the steps to the jetty I felt a flutter in my stomach and I thought such beautiful creatures some of them at least he was entirely on interested in me in everything everything besides whatever it was going on in his work where you quickly I left my room and tried the door across the hall it was locked I considered running downstairs hurriedly snooping around the thought made my heart pound with my chest I let it be . The house was quiet I was out of ideas about what I might make him for dinner and I ambled over to the bookshelves to see if there was a cookbook but I found nothing house without recipes what kind of home was that I opened each of the kitchen drawers in time then the cup it goes slipped in alongside the spice rack I found a slim blue volume I pulled it out and leaf through its pages recipes scrolled in fine black script beautiful cus of handwriting describing casseroles soups cakes I pictured how a film a chill woman a chill I still buy not mature. A lost child that's what I am I stopped at one recipe an Asian fish soup realized that I had most of what I needed to make it and decided to cook a small batch a trial run for dinner that evening I won't oil in a pan and added spring onion and Chilli Ginger sense drifted up with he stuck his head around the dough and smells good in here just a little soup there's plenty if you like to try some confounding my expectations he sat down at the table hurriedly I ladle the soup into a bowl and placed it before him. He closed his eyes and it held deeply and then looked up at me surprised watching him left me with a sense of calm a warmth he devoured every last morsel then took a slow deep breath and pushed his chair back from the table if you come across any more where that came from don't hold back he said it was standing up and walking back to his room. The. It was pelting down with rain outside bag I left the table and brusquely thanked me for breakfast. Excuse me I blurted I don't suppose you have a pair of boots I can borrow unfortunately not here applied test may your wife doesn't have a para could use a peculiar expression crossed his face before he shook his head you can wear mine with a pair of thick socks and a raincoat No he replied she doesn't even have a raincoat out here I thought in these conditions she doesn't exist what size I Here he asked I'll go into town and buy what you need even shoes size she size coat size or whatever it is you're going to need to live and work out here he pulled on his coat and stepped out the front door without a word but 1st impulse was to try the bedroom door my heart was beating so fiercely that I felt my age or arms bulge with each pulsation as I pushed the handle and felt the door he had but I quickly leapt over the threshold that had neatly made up a chair. Another door across the room I tiptoed over and tried the door locked by curiosity so intense that I felt sick the thought of what I have yawned attacked out of the bedroom and closed the door but was gripped by a sudden fear that he might have scattered to the layer dust across the room to check for tracks upon his return so I opened the door again crouching down to see if it were true to check if he really was so on hinged. The dock for Glee and not a trace of dust be seen. Back in the kitchen I started to fill the sink with water but then felt suddenly compelled to return to the bedroom door I looked at the floor and saw something a pine needle an old trick it might be a coincidence but I couldn't take the chance I carefully placed the pie needle on the bill handle my hands trembling late that evening he stepped in through the front door as I was standing in the kitchen making a cup of tea should I heat up your data fully I felt like a housewife waiting for Aspen to arrive home after a long and arduous day at work no I'll have it tomorrow. As he passed me his shoulder grazed mine and I stood perfectly motion. Side the bedroom door I paused before placing a hand on the door handle eyes met quick as a flash I forced my gaze to the kitchen laptop and he disappeared inside he returned carrying a bright yellow raincoat and a pair of boots just like his own I would be a miniature version of him for a split 2nd I was foolish enough to feel he has that everything the old woman in the shop keyed the price of the coffee into the register Yes I said nothing from back here she cost a glance to the stand filled with pain killers in condoms no thank you I paid and left feeling the prickle of her smirk at my back a felt certain she had finally managed to walk out where she recognized me from I've been involved in a scandal everyone in the country knew she had spied my photograph on her old newspaper stand and made the connection to think that the holder of Broadcasting House was buying groceries from her shop Alice had told her self. The strumpet had swept away on to television screens across the nation I started putting together salad I was beginning to go tired of the formality that he insisted upon I have been living here for just under 2 months now and I was just as cut off in the world as he was I decided to punish him by going into town that weekend but sitting on the bus I regretted it and got off at an earlier stop I couldn't go into the center of town couldn't bear the thought of people seeing me then my punishment came crashing down on me. Someone exclaimed in surprise I spun around to recognize an old friend from university she asked whether it was true that I had resigned and moved out of uses house I noted how awful she said well it's my own fault I replied he was so good on the telly We watched every week I told her that I needed to go she hugged me it was 10 years since I'd bust seen her and it felt like an unpleasant reminder of the path but really it was the contrast between who I was then and who I was now that shook me most that Sunday I looked down at him from my bedroom window he sat calmly under the cherry tree gazing out of the garden from beneath the canopy of white blossom I went downstairs and open the doors of the garden shall I make you don't ask. Just have a glass of wine white Perhaps you'd like one too. I say thanks I fetched the glasses in the bottle and sat in the Chantix to his having lived in his house for long I asked yes since I was a boy do you know what this is he pointed at the White Daisy like blames in the low stone wall I think it spoiled his brow I said. Named after the Irish as of the Norse god Boulder when the petals close in the evenings and open up again during the day the flower head looks like a blinking eye he looked at me her surprise. I only know that because I was obsessed with father as a girl he was my 1st love the 1st to break my heart to. Remember the story of Boulder it's a sad lovely story sad and lovely he asked. He brings about the destruction of the world but that allows for a new a better world to a much house so bolder dreams of awful things blood disturbing omens the other gods become concerned for him so they gather in the assembly and Odin decides to investigate. He saddles up his steed and rides to hell ame the underworld upon his arrival he calls forth a c.r.s. And asks why preparations are being made in the great hall she reluctantly tells him that they are preparing to welcome boulder into their midst Boulder is going to die bagus said yes so what happens when Odin returns home with word of boulders death the gods refuse to accept it his mother frig takes both sides promising not to harm boulder from every earthly creation fire water ion stone every animal birds make every plant every disease she goes to each and every one of them. So he becomes indestructible Bagga said. Yes and the gods have some fun they shoot arrows throw spears and stones at him nothing can hurt him Loki looks at what's going on growing more and more envious of Boulder he transforms himself into a woman and goes to frig and asks her if she really received swore an oath from all the creations that they wouldn't harm Boulder she tells him Yes but then remembers that she neglected to ask the mistletoe. I paused how did spoken this much in weeks. Loki picks the mistletoe and goes to herd Boulder's brother Loki asks her why he isn't honoring Valda like the other gods herd is blind and explains to Loki that he has no weapon to use. Help you Loki tells him her draws the bow Loki gives him and Loki cafe paces the mistletoe helping her to take. The mistletoe pierces boulders body and he falls down dead Bagga looked up shocked the dice Yes the gods are distraught bagus sat lost in the full confession of the bottle this when I returned to the garden he was lying on the grass Have you ever tried lying down itis his voice was distant wearily I lay down my entire body was tense I was afraid him my heart pounding after a while I turned my head he had fine lines around his eye I felt an urge to stroke his brow after a short while I stood up he had fallen asleep the wind in the sunshine had made him drowsy I made my way into the kitchen and started on dinner when everything was ready I walked out on to the veranda to cool back in I saw that it had started to rain. He lay there in the drizzle perfectly at peace the rain began to beat down harder I ran out to him his hair was dripping wet his shirt and trousers clinging to his body I shook him by the shoulder and his eyes shot open his conscious lying like this he said he continued to gaze at me raindrops hammering against his face he grimaced and started laughing come into the house I said grabbing his hand he looked at me I think you could do with a hot bath he nodded a climbed the stairs and turned the bathroom tap and when I turned around to call out that it was ready I found him standing in the doorway I let out a gasp a surprise why did he insist on creeping around like that it's ready I said that he remained in the doorway blocking the exit he pulled his jumper over his head without looking at me he was wearing nothing underneath I hesitated he fumbled with the buttons of his fly I turned away as he let his trousers fall to the floor I blushed What was he doing he stepped into the tub his body sliding under water as I hurried out and pulled the door firmly closed behind me agitated and heavy handed I cleared the table downstairs once again he was at pains to demonstrate just how little I meant to him I was nobody nothing forced to accept the self sacrificing role thrust upon me after finishing the washing up I made my way down into the cellar to fetch another bottle of wine if he could take such liberties then so would I Just then I heard him on the stairs and bag appeared fully dressed but a Now I asked warmer thanks he pulled the chair out and then reached for the bottle and pulled himself some wine we sat in silence. Did you guys hear university he asked out of the blue Yes I studied humanities and. I knew I had to step the mark I've studied law and order he uttered the words into that around he looked at me they afraid of me I almost choked on my wine. Right of you know I. He got to me his gaze suddenly Doc pacing perhaps a little I conceded his expression softened. I can understand that but you don't need to be. The face in the bathroom mirror I gazed back at me as shaking the same wide eyed frog like expression I always wore off to drinking too much and humiliating myself . I drank 3 glasses of water and downed a few pain kiss my hands tremble bagus tell was why I had left it draped over the edge of the bath tub still damp I held it close to my face and breathed in his son he'd be sending me packing off to the us. Back to the city cautiously I crept downstairs and into the kitchen I made a pot of coffee and waited an hour passed and another he never got up this light could I tell him when he got up reveal the fact that it was my birthday I am nothing I thought I am nothing and I have nothing. I stepped outside and made my way down to the tool shed shame the image returned to me clearly more often now than before I saw myself sprawled beneath Kay like a flash she would prove a nest Christmas Pig so him taking me with my stockings around my ankles the figures in the doorway out of the corner of my eye that unexpected appearance like a cold draw off to. Love no I can't go back I have to stay here I strode down through the garden and continued waiting terrified of losing my job I started to think of use who had never been anything but good to me yet whose life I had still been willing to reduced to rubble his add my own and all for the director general k. As I called him a man who no longer cared a jot for me when I went back up to the house he was sitting in the living room and looked up from his book and heading down to the jetty for a spot of fishing he said I turned and there's a road feed too if you'd like it you do like to fish to any. It was difficult to suppress the wave of elation that rose up within me I replied that I'd always loved fishing he made his way down as the saddle returning with tea rods in a tackle box silently We walked to the jetty baggage leading the way a flattering in my stomach we stood side by side on the jetty casting out a reading in our lines the pink glow of the evening sky before us so it's my birthday today I blurted out your birthday today 33 I noted embarrassed he put down his rod and made his way into the boat house he emerged carrying a half full bottle of Cal the dice here and move the cork and took a swig before passing me the bottle. Happy birthday Alice thank you I replied feeling small so who will see cles and pale yellow in the evening light what are you really doing here he asked abruptly Why aren't you in work why aren't you around other people technically are both in work and around other people well only just he said the image rushed back grey doughy Farai. I forced my gaze to the water to banish it from my mind if els a bit too early to settle down well now that you're 33 it's probably about time do you think so. You can do as you please as far as I'm concerned I guess said passing me the bottle don't worry about your behavior last night my face reddened I'm sorry about what happened I said I thought it's hardly as if your own behavior was exemplary I felt a tug at the end of my road he ran to fetch a landing net and I heave the wriggling fish from the water ready he said he scooped up the strong shimmering creature lifting it on to the jetty I crouched down and I struck the fish family on the head 3 determined consecutive raps with the butt of the knife see trout I said we have to cook it now he said this is the 1st fish of the year will light a fire in the girl he sliced the abdomen I put in through the end it's into the sea a goal dived down snapping them up it was dark only the occasional flicker of light to be seen across the black water we ate quietly accompanying the fish with sips of cold white wine the embers of the fire still crackling it was a cool night I wrapped myself in a blanket and curious to know what you run away from he said I did the corner of my eye I could see that he was looking right at me it wasn't clear what signal he was sending a lot my gaze on the black few would. How much longer will you be out here by yourself I asked you mean when is no more coming back no that's her name it'll be a while yet she's a long way away something inside me sank No she had a name she existed what was wrong with me daydreaming that other people's wives weren't real this I berated myself in with like you're not that person anymore you're someone else now what did you do before coming here he lost my job I mean historian really I spent a few years teaching at the university no wait in history we drank in silence I was tired and drug swaying inwardly can I trust you he asked brusquely What do you mean are you trustworthy what you mean generally speaking you know what I mean he didn't look at me I took it as more of an accusation that a question but perhaps that wasn't fair what is he asking me if I'm loyal Why do you ask I said I needed to be worthy of my trust I wonder if you trust I said I am a you he evaded my gaze sitting and looking out over the field without Ansari I can be exactly what you want me to be I said regretting my wides the instant they crossed my lips carry. Whispered back and he turned to face me instead what did you say and kiri a Elysium he fell silent and looked Instantly her morsel that would be a nice name even nicer than Alice you should change it and it I said he put the remainder of the wine into his class and stood up. He said facing me Alice I said. Elysium hiked on he said I know what it is it is what is it he asked and Terran is here it means to die he took a step back towards the edge would you like to swim with me and as you he pulled off his shirt letting it fall on the ground and moving backwards as he held my case I sat there on the frenching his expression was strange I can animal What is it about you I said he said nothing continuing his slow or would you I don't swim I replied testily step by step he inched away until he was standing right at the edge of the jetty that he threw himself backwards and disappeared I sat on the wall not a sound to be heard but the echo of the splash I rushed to the water's edge instead out into the Black Sea he was gone Hello I gossiped hello he passed through the surface of the water with a great God I screamed Why didn't you save the air as if he come the ladder up on to the jetty and walks towards me dripping wet laughing the animal in him something surged through me and I slapped his face as hard as I could then turn tail sprinting up the steps Elysium he called after me I ran as fast as I could had to get away from him before he came off to me before he came to take me I looked back and caught a glimpse of him his torso cleaving brightly in the moonlight gust and forged ahead exhausted on through the garden and into the forest I glanced back once again to see him coming up the steps he spotted me I ran further on and on deeper into the forest I stopped. The forest at night black and silent nothing but the sound of my breathing to awake all that lay dormant I hid behind I can try to take deep breaths my lungs burned if he was approaching that he catch me he was insane if I went on sooner or later I'd surely come out of the main road but what awaited me that the very same thing I had run away from why I maybe react the way I had. I was suddenly engulfed by shame the wolf in him slowly I started walking trying to retrace my steps I held to property someone was shouting Alice I'm sorry he said I was at the edge of the forest calling out of the top of his lungs I stopped 30 meters also from him and stood there Steffi encircled by the forest watching him as he rambled back and forth in despair I'm here a cold he stopped and gazed in the direction of my voice then caught sight of me slowly he approached he looked distraught I'm sorry haggis I am so sorry it's Ok he stood in front of me shirtless we were down the bank together shy of one another he stopped in the garden we come inside should I make you hot drink I nodded gingerly couldn't help myself sketch changed he said I've been to his bathroom till I climbed the stairs to my room I pulled on a pair of trousers and a jumper and made my way down to the kitchen he was standing at the stove wearing a white will jumper his head still damp he passed me a hot toddy the mug steamed gently the scent of cinnamon. I said. My wife makes it in the winter he mumbled He seemed suddenly tempted this is what life is like for him I thought he experiences twice as many moods as the average past and the entire spectrum easing become dangerous he said just as the thought was crossing my mind have you given me reason to think anything else. He replied his black hash. I took a sip from my mug Why did you come back I was afraid I said so and I afraid that you wouldn't come back then and you'd have had to come and get me. I would have he gazed at me with the faintest hint of a smile I placed my hands in front of him on the table his hands brown and strong wall if only those hands could just touch mine but now I guess said without warning it's definitely time for bed he crossed the room. Straight well. You're quite content down there with that Bagga I gather at. The women in the shop and to the items I'd place on the cash to ask Spike never once Lucky Man am I Yes. That's good he'd be lonely without someone that. I paid she turned away from me and began slicing I've been some cardboard boxes with a blade to indicate that all conversation was. I made my way high with an uncomfortable feeling of being watched when I let myself into the house it was clear that he still hadn't returned. It had been 3 days now well I say something was wrong when evening fell I drew the curtains the reflections in the windows were making me jump I was convinced that I could see pale faces gliding by side I went to bed fully clothed a hammer from the to shed on the bedside table I was woken by noises downstairs and having forgotten my nighttime terrors I mean did he recognize the footsteps as his I trembled with delight and sprinted out of my room it's you he was standing in the hallway he looked different His face wore on dark rings under his eyes. Alice I was worried about you I said things took a little longer than expected he said no more and headed for his bedroom the next a heart they stepped out of his room he asked me not to make him any breakfast or dinner I decided to smoke him out with the scent of freshly baked bread I combined the whole meal in course rifle Our with the treacle and other ingredients it was only after I placed the bread tin in the oven that I spotted the fact that it had to stay there for 15 hours it was to be steamed not baked the bread wouldn't be ready until the following morning. Afraid that he would leave his room to find the oven switched on in the middle of the night I lay down on the couch behind the table I awoke to the sound of him stepping out of his room the bread I drifted off what would he think what was the time I stayed where I was stretched out on the sofa behind the table and he walked through the whole way and into the bathroom for a club I stayed where I was stuck still. Then I had a faint humming sound a mysterious through. It stopped he stepped out of the bathroom he stopped by the kitchen door where the oven glowed like an old atomic reactor and returned to his room just before he closed the door I caught a glimpse of him I should never have seen what I did he had shaved off all of his hair his cranium was white but for a few stripes of dark hair that had been missed I heard footsteps outside as I stood in the kitchen early the next morning preparing to slice the steaming hot life I peered out through the condensation that covered the grass pane spotting his outline as he passed through the gate and along the drive dressed in black How did you manage to leave the house without me hearing him this wasn't right I walked out into the garden and stood there for a while gazing in the direction of the road nothing he was gone I hesitated for a moment and then fetched a ladder filled a bucket with warm soapy water and grabbed a cloth I leaned a ladder up against the wall beneath the locked room the window was filthy I wiped the cloth across the pain and peered through the glass I spotted boxes stacked up against the wall women's shoes it's more boxes line the other wall some filled with folded garments so this was where he kept his wife's things but why was she going to be away for so long have a longings needed to be packed away like that no. While I've come to think of his wife is nothing more than a fabrication in the late afternoon he reappeared as I was emerging from the tool shed there you are I exclaimed he stood before me his skull pale and angular dressed in his black suit he glared at me. Alice the other was on when I got up in the night yes I'm sorry about that I was making a loaf of bread Surely you realize that you can't just leave the oven wearing away all night long I'm sorry I said I couldn't tell him that I kept to sleep in what I had witnessed his frightening behavior during the night that you shaved off. My gosh with as much surprise as I could muster I often shave it in the summer a hungry no thank you he turned away and walked up to the house because I see you I thought it was hardly surprising his wife had made herself guess I was increasingly convinced that she had left him without any intention of returning Why else would have things be packed away in boxes it was essentially how I had left my own husband use free and without tidying up after myself that was nothing compared to what I had done to him in the midst of my agitation bagger reappeared do you drink gin I do you yes he sat down in the garden chair in place to glasses 2 cans of tonic and a bottle on the table chairs at us kids it will feel good to get drunk tonight he announced any special reason he sighed Yes and. Thank you for being so precise I thought to myself today is a special day he said I didn't ask any more questions I added a little more gentle my glass where were you before you came here he asked out of the blue where was I worked in t.v. I presented a programme on no wage in history you were a presenter Yes I snapped annoyed was it really that difficult to imagine and you came here he said that's right. Because you couldn't be on television anymore yes I had to disappear but why was it a financial thing no political no then that leaves only one possibility he stared into the distance at the mountains the pink sky pondering did you have. I turned to face him and our eyes met husband he asked No I said he said no more draining his glass and closing his eyes his expression became serious almost intense and he was so beautiful that it was painful to observe. This was how he looked when he made love with nor I tried to shake the thought of that very moment he stood up and walked away as always without a word no good bye bloody bloody bloody hell I thought downing my glass of on happiness I heard a door open and moments later he was by my side once again this time wearing his will jumper I think we both He's a frames to gaze into don't you oh yes I said it wasn't long before the flames blazed up was against the dark night sky and he sat down once again so he said you left your job you were offered a job that someone else should have had he had read the papers after all he must know about me so you a got involved with someone who worked that someone seniority you power you found out all right I thought I fixed my gaze on the flickering flame. I was invited to their home it was his wife's for birthday party and the house was full of people. Everyone left their coats in the baby's room they've moved the baby into the box room for the night later on after the birth take God nodded off he led me into the room where the coats were and we well before we knew it half the party were hovering in the doorway gazing on in gleeful disbelief but how he asked the baby monitor had been left in there he leaned his head back and chuckled So this was what February March yes a few weeks before I came here he turned and looked directly at me I won't be away for days at a time from now on you know that's over now I reached out for another log Oh what is it a splinter let me see I'll get it for you he walked through the veranda door and I followed him taking a seat at the table he reappeared with a needle he sat down grasped my hand and straight at me his expression mild but. It's important he stay still Ok. It's something I need to tell you what is it I heard him swallow. Well gosh he held the splinter triumphantly up to the light surprised I gazed up at it and then down again at my hands still held in his as we sat there together I thought it's time now. And. He let go of my hand instead a time to bed I think goodnight as I sank motionless I remained there until he was inside his bathroom. He said tread softly and I heard I traipsed up the stairs washed my face and went to bed I woke with a sense of unease. Remembered the firewood left budding outside I got out of bed and walked over to the window the fire was out but that the side what was left of it sat back and that he sat by himself in the darkness minding the depths of his own soul I didn't like it without warning he turned his head and looked straight at me I have back to my bed my heart beating old a Foster I heard his footsteps on the stand fast paced heavy straight to my door. He was standing outside my door his voice thick strange I'm sorry I didn't realize that I was frightening you I said nothing can I come in for a bit it's unlocked the door opened slowly he stood before me gazing at me with his date Doc eyes he must have had much more to drink since I Tand then confused he took an understudy step into the room there's a hammer on your bedside table I need to be able to defend myself can I sleep on your flow out of all my flow he didn't reply I placed a pillow in the flow on top of the rug I'm sorry he slide he closed his eyes and instantly drifted off into a deep sleep slowly I shut my had a child what was he the sudden eruption that the wolf and him all the same I felt so warm and safe having him that curled up on my bedroom floor I close my eyes in town to face the wall. He was sitting at the table when I arrived danced asked him with me I hoped that he wouldn't feel embarrassed by last night forced to compensate by treating me with his traditional icy contempt but he wasn't angry he looked up at me and smiled after he had finished his breakfast I asked him Do you remember what you dreamt about us night. Night you had a nightmare you were howling I had to wake you I don't remember a thing he fell silent and looked as if he was gathering his thoughts about the forgotten episode as I washed the dishes he turned his chair around to face me I just remembered remembered I've never told you about the time that I was taken he said What do you mean taken well I still don't know for certain who they were they came in the middle of the night and seized me 5 or 6 men nor was he with me but they told her for my own and bundled me into the back of the van what I said we drove for hours I lay on the floor in the back tied up then the van stopped the back doors were open and they pulled me out we were at the edge of a forest it was the middle of winter snow all around we marched into the forest to a clearing and they gave me a chat I sat down my hands still tied behind my back then the man who had taken me brought more chairs out lining them up into the snow in front of me men and women a pair emerging from their woodland on all sides they wore long dark clothes and masks but masks that covered their faces. There were 12 of them birds of every species a raven and Magpie a girl and a great tit and a robin one woman wore a mask that covered her whole head a man ut it was an incredible sight this donnish ing me beautiful she marrying green I started to love and he looked up at me startled you putting my leg on you I'm not he said I looked at him puzzled he continued I realized then that this was a tribe you know my case was to be had the head judge stepped forward she wore an eagle mask she instructed me to stand she read my name aloud and announced that I was charged with shamed Avik I wasn't familiar with the term but still I knew what she meant she asked whether I pleaded guilty I shook my head after that things moved quickly the judge in the Eagle mask sentenced me to death proclaiming the nature of your evil deeds makes you nothing but a file nithing as she said the words I looked again at the man and she turned away from me it was only then that I recognized. It was no I sat there unflinching listening to every word he said and then he woke me up he said so it was a dream you told me it wasn't what he said you were talking about it as if it had actually happened he laughed Well it was a very lucid dream. The glistening Green Man Arts had a rapture of guilt I was careful to buy everything we needed to avoid having to return to the shop later in the week after I handed her the money the old woman stopped for a moment that was a terrible business with his wife ought perhaps you weren't invited to the funeral too much to be getting on with in the garden. I left without a word could it really be true that his wife was dead he didn't come out of his dream when dinner was ready I found him at the end of the jetty fishing dinner is ready aren't you having anything he asked as I placed the plate at the table you usually eat alone I said do I Yes you have done ever since I arrived I always eat out of the why because you told me that's the way it would be he gazed up at me and his belief that don't you want to eat with me I mean when that be simpler Well yes is that what you want of course I do this it was the 1st time we had eaten together indoors in any case. I'm sorry I didn't know what to do say. Now is the time to be generous I thought the man is only just buried his wife Alice can you come outside with me now is something I need to show you fetch a jumper. I thought of him through the garden into the red warm June evening he headed down to the jetty darkness was beginning to fall I was afraid of him for a long while we sat without speaking gazing out over the waters the sunset everything otherwise still and tranquil that he said the moon the moon had suddenly taken on a deep red he knew a searing white crescent around the top half of the glowing sphere. Lunar eclipse I said. This so slowly that Moon was consumed by the red gloom I felt content. And unhappy let me look at you he said well let me look at he I turned to face him you're beautiful Alice your handsome man I said it's my face groom I couldn't help but smile. He got up standing in front of me as the deep red all disappeared behind him. That me look at you I sat instead up at him smiling warily unsure what it was that he wanted from me. That you want to take off that they cut at us this was it but here with some hesitation I pulled my arms out of the coats leaves and laid it across my lap sitting there in nothing but my flimsy t. Shirt he sighed so beautiful. Thing. Alice. I didn't know what to say you have to let me see more of You Can I please slowly I pulled my t. Shirt over my head Oh Alice. Which way you headed I asked North she replied Me too let's go she said and we drive away slowly I trundle the bicycle along the drive the house before me I tried the front door locked I walked up to the veranda door attempting to look through the glass into the darkness of the livingroom. My gaze roamed the room I found myself staring at a pale face I screamed he was motionless in his chair a dead gaze I stumbled backward saw him leap up and tear open the verandah doors go away he shouted his eyes were dark hollows no I cried back you need me no Alice you need to get away from me I'm not going anywhere you're in mourning he looked down calmly slowly shaking his head No I'm not Can't you get it I said he looked up at me I have nowhere else to go I shouted darkness conceiving me dizziness coursing through me watching as he lugged in my direction.
