Kenneth M. Beebe - The Martha's Vineyard Times

The Martha's Vineyard Times
Kenneth M. Beebe (“Ken”), also known as “Dr. Play,” the name on the business card he handed to people he met with his philosophy for living — “Make play a high priority in your life, for if you die tomorrow no one can play for you, but someone can and will do your work for you” — died peacefully at home in Vineyard Haven on March 19, 2021. He was 76.
An avid fisherman and birder, despite the slow progression of Parkinson’s disease, he continued to double-haul through life, providing an inspiration to those he met.
Ken was born on Dec. 14, 1944, in New London, Conn., son of Horace and Edna Beebe. He graduated from the University of Bridgeport in 1966, and went on to earn a degree from the University of Rhode Island and an Ed.D. from the University of South Dakota, thus putting the “doctor” in Dr. Play.

Wildlife experts solve security camera mystery - The Martha's Vineyard Times

Wildlife experts solve security camera mystery

Recent security camera footage at a Tisbury home captured a small animal scampering through a yard. Baffled, the homeowner reached out to The Times, inquiring if it might be a weasel. The homeowner’s instincts were partly right. The creature was identified by Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society president Brian Athearn, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary director Suzan Bellincampi, and BiodiversityWorks director Luanne Johnson as a river otter.
“Unbeknownst to most folks, river otters are quite agile on land and move long distances on overland routes across the Island,” Johnson emailed. “There are otter runs through the State Forest. It is mating season, but otters are moving around the Island throughout the year — however, they are often doing so at night or around dawn [and] dusk.”
