FOR JOMON Puthenpurackal, it has been a long wait. One of the few who tracked and highlighted the Abhaya murder case right from the beginning, the rights activist says it had become a mission for him to see to it that justice was delivered. It took 28 years but the wait was worth it, he says. ....

Hours after the order was passed, the two accused, charged under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) and on bail since 2009, were sent back to jail.
The CBI had named another priest, Father Jose Puthrikkayl, as the second accused but the court allowed his discharge petition before the trial, which began last year, citing lack of evidence.
“I had been waiting for this day. Truth has the final victory. I have been praying for the soul of my sister to get justice,’’ said Abhaya’s brother Biju Thomas, who is employed in the Middle East. Abhaya’s parents, Thomas Aikkarakunnel and Leelamma, died in 2016. ....

Sister Abhaya murder case: Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Stephy guilty


A court under the Central Bureau of Investigation announced their verdict in the murder case of Catholic nun Sister Abhaya on Tuesday. The special court pronounced two accused, Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Stephy, as guilty.
Sister Abhaya, a resident of Pius X convent in Kottayam in Kerala, was found dead in the well of the convent on March 27, 1992. Initially, the Crime Branch and CBI deemed the death a suicide but activist Joemon Puthenpurackal formed an Action Council and was pursuing the case.
The turnaround happened after Puthenpurackal, managed to get the case reopenedand and following this, the CBI cracked it. On November 19, 2008, the CBI arrested the three accused, who included Poothrikkayil, a former Malayalam professor at the Kottayam college where Abhaya studied; Kottor, the Diocesan chancellor of the Catholic Church at Kottayam and Seffi, a resident of the convent when the incident took place. ....

A CBI court in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday found a catholic priest and a nun guilty in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Sister Abhaya, whose body was found in the well of a convent in Kottayam in 1992. The verdict in this regard was pronounced by CBI special court judge J Sanal Kumar.
The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on December 23 (Wednesday). The court said the murder charges against Father Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy will stand. Both are in judicial custody. Another accused in the case, Fr Poothrakayal was discharged earlier over lack of evidence. ....
