From Nancy Drew to Frankenstein, author Monique Roffey discusses the books that shaped her life and work

Born in Trinidad, Monique Roffey is an award-winning author of several books, including six novels. Her memoir, With the Kisses of his Mouth (2011), traced a personal journey of mid-life sexual self-discovery. Her most recent novel, The Mermaid of Black Conch, won the Costa Novel of the Year 2020 and was shortlisted for several other literary awards. Set in a tiny Caribbean village, it features a fisherman whose surprise catch turns out to be a beautiful young woman cursed by jealous wives to live as a mermaid. Monique Roffey appears at Aye Write this week.

Polar classification scheme sheds light on bold expeditions that never were

Last modified on Fri 30 Apr 2021 14.41 EDT
“Polar exploration,” said Apsley Cherry-Garrard, the companion of Capt Robert Falcon Scott, who later found the Antarctic explorer’s body, “is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time that has yet been devised.”
But while previous generations of polar travellers devised their own rules for their gruelling journeys, a new certification scheme has been launched after growing controversy over allegedly inflated claims of exploits at the Earth’s two poles.
The polar expedition classification scheme [PECS], set up in March, aims to ensure those who claim to have made so-called unsupported crossings have not benefited from any human help and to verify that claims of new firsts are historically valid.

The New Zealand Herald is bringing back some of the best premium stories of 2020. Today we look at travel - the domestic trips we've taken and books we've read in order to get out
travel fix from home.
Scotty Stevenson: New Zealand, the place we call home
It was May 4, which feels like a year ago or yesterday depending on your perspective. In the current phrasing we, as a country, were a week into level 3 of the Government's Covid-19 response. There was some hope that soon we would be able to get back on track, or at least get our children out of the house. But there was also a distinct funk. You could feel it, although it would be foolhardy to attempt to articulate it for all. For me, it was this: I felt disconnected, cut off, marooned. I was sure that, like me, others pined for a little piece of New Zealand - a drive, a dive, a hike, a bike, a walk, a swim, a trek, a trip, a run in the hills - and I wondered where that might be and why.
