PETALING JAYA: No one will forget the way Viktor Axelsen of Denmark celebrated his Olympic Games men’s singles gold-medal victory on Monday.
He wept like a baby. He hugged his coach Kenneth Jonassen. He went on to exchange his shirt with Chen Long of China and they briefly spoke in Mandarin.
It was an emotional moment as the 27-year-old Axelsen had put his years of preparation, blood, sweat and tears into that spectacular final show en route to beating defending champion Chen Long 21-15, 21-12 in 51 minutes, to become only the second Dane in 25 years after Poul-Erik Hoyer to win an Olympics badminton gold.

Badminton: Back-to-back Malaysian tourneys to be held in April

Datuk Kenny Goh
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Open and Malaysian Masters are set to be staged back-to-back next April as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) unveiled their revised tournament calendar which adopts a cluster system where possible.
The Malaysian Open will take place from March 31-April 4, followed by the Malaysian Masters from April 6-11.
The “Malaysia bubble” is one of three clusters confirmed together with the ones in Indonesia and Denmark.
The “Indonesia bubble” will be the Indonesian Masters (June 1-6) and Indonesian Open (June 8-13) while the Denmark Open (Oct 12-17) and Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals form the ‘Denmark bubble’.
