Author: Feb 27, 2021 Although I love good narrative nonfiction, if given the choice, I generally reach for the novel on my nightstand. From the moment I decided to write a book about the intersecting lives of Marie Curie and Loie Fuller, my head was filled with visions of Loie swirling on a stage and Marie waltzing through a radium-lit laboratory. To construct my colorful idea for the narrative while accurately relating events in the lives of the dancer and the scientist, I turned to creative nonfiction. While I was not able to find any evidence of Marie dancing in her lab and had to abandon that idea, the technique allowed me to write parallel biographies, based on extensive research, that read like a novel.

Allen Wier, novelist, short story writer, named Capote prize winner

There s a newer accolade given at the Monroeville Literary Festival, named for Harper Lee s childhood friend, who also grew up to be a writer. Allen Wier, who taught creative writing at the University of Alabama from 1980 to 1994, was recently announced as sixth recipient of the Truman Capote Prize for Distinguished Work in Literary Non-Fiction or the Short Story. Wier s published four novels, the 2006 Tehano, 1989 s A Place for Outlaws,  1983 s Departing as Air, and 1978 s Blanco, along with two collections of stories, 1978 s Things About to Disappear, and the 2017 Late Night, Early Morning. He s recently retired from teaching, after stints at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Carnegie-Mellon University, Florida International University, Longwood College and Hollins College, along with numerous writer-in-residence gigs.
