Santa campaign spreads joy amongst Wharfedale s older residents

OLDER Wharfedale residents have been benefitting from a festive campaign supported by local schoolchildren. Home Instead Senior Care launched its Be a Santa to a Senior scheme with an eye on helping care home residents feel less isolated over the Christmas period. The campaign got underway in November when the company asked primary school pupils in the area to create and donate Christmas cards, artwork or kind messages. The resulting gifts have now been handed out to clients and residents in Ilkley, including at Chesterton Court Care Home and Straven House Nursing Home, and at Burley Hall in Burley-in-Wharfedale. Home Instead’s Business Development and Marketing Manager, Katie White, said: “We were inundated with responses and had more than 200 donations from several of the local schools.

Ilkley Town Mayor s message at Christmas | Wharfedale Observer

ILKLEY Town Mayor, Councillor Mark Stidworthy, has shared his final message of the year. He said: “Changes to Covid-19 restrictions across the United Kingdom have disrupted already limited opportunities to see friends and family this Christmas. We will feel disappointment, anger, anxiety and other strong emotions intensified at this poignant time of the year. We may be dismayed but I am sure we will not be defeated, nor lightly set aside the high levels of personal responsibility that Ilkley residents have shown throughout this crisis. The virus spreads rapidly if we lower our guard. “Over the last nine months we showed ourselves to be a resilient, forward-looking, positive community, ready to help our neighbours. We took difficult steps to protect each other and the NHS, and did so with pride, knowing that many in our town and district were working tirelessly to keep us safe. We supported our amazing local businesses through this most difficult of economic times, further

Charity overcomes Covid to deliver Christmas cheer to Ilkley residents

NEARLY 90 local residents enjoyed a surprise Christmas treat, when volunteers from a local charity delivered the present of either a hamper or a potted plant to them in their homes. Organised by Ilkley and District Good Neighbours, the Christmas Parcel Project, which began some 25 years ago, has always brought an annual touch of seasonal good cheer to a number of the area’s older and less able residents; some of whom might feel lonely and isolated during the festive period. Ilkley Good Neighbours Trustee and Christmas Parcels Co-ordinator, Ed Duguid said: “At this particularly tough time for everyone and certainly for some of the older members of our community, we all agreed we had to find a way to deliver the annual Christmas Parcels and bring a smile to their faces.”
