Throughout the breeding season, the Paulick Report will be sharing photos of foals from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso in the “Toast to Vino Rosso” series.
This time around, we're going back to Elm Tree Farm in Paris, Ky. to visit a colt out of the Majesticperfection mare Maggie Maggie.
This is a Feb. 20 foal, bred by Nancy Shuford, from the family of Grade 3 winner Poker Player.
Elm Tree Farm's Jody Huckabay has been a big believer in Vino Rosso from the jump. Speaking with Huckabay earlier this year, he said he had five foaling out on the farm this season, between his own and for clients. He was so impressed by the first couple that hit the ground in the early months of the year, he bought a couple more seasons to the stallion in 2021.

This time around, we visit a colt out of the winning Pulpit mare War Relic, bred in Kentucky by Elm Tree Farm.
The dam is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Rush Bay, and the extended family features names including Grade 2 winner Itsaknockout and Grade 3 winner Chorwon.

Film photography has been in Esther May Campbell’s blood since childhood. She was given a Polaroid camera when she was eight years old, but it was the Olympus OM1 she received in her early teens that really changed things.
‘My teens were quite tricky times,’ she explains. ‘I was at a fairly dishevelled all-girls state school, and there was a certain amount of bullying. Taking pictures helped me navigate some of those relationships, and being in the darkroom meant I could escape and process the pictures of the world around me. It was bliss.’

The $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park has long served as a local steppingstone toward the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3), Turfway's signature race. But Friday's renewal of the John Battaglia is the most significant to date—for the first time, the 1 1/16-mile race serves as a Road to the Kentucky Derby prep event awarding qualification points to the top four finishers on a 10-4-2-1 basis.

A son of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, Gretzky the Great is easily the most accomplished runner in the John Battaglia field. A two-time stakes winner, Gretzky the Great used his pace-tracking speed to dominate the Summer (G1) at Woodbine last fall by 3 1/4 lengths. Although he hasn't run since finishing sixth against a tough field in the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), Gretzky the Great has been training forwardly for his return and looks tough to beat under hot jockey Gerardo Corrales. Don't forget, Gretzky the Great broke his maiden over the Tapeta track at Woodbine last summer, so switching from turf to the Tapeta footing at Turfway shouldn't be an issue.
