AFTER MANY YEARS holding the Addison town meeting in the nearby elementary school, municipal officials decided to hold this year’s annual gathering in the Addison Town Hall building off Route 22A at the four corners next to the Baptist church. Selectboard members believe the historic building has enough room for meeting participants to safely social distance. Independent photo/Andy Kirkaldy

Stepping Up: These Vermonters of Color Want to Bring Their Perspectives to Local Office

Thomas Franco was an aspiring doctor when he realized that his real passion was policy.
While a premed student at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, Franco volunteered at a free health clinic outside of Cleveland. Talking to the patients helped him recognize the societal inequities that lead to poverty and, in turn, poor health outcomes.
"It was just like this moment where I realized,
OK, if I'm going to make a difference, and I am going to change the narrative here, I have to dig deeper," Franco said.
That change in direction ultimately helped lead 25-year-old Franco to Rutland, where he lives with his partner, George Hodulik. A first-time candidate, Franco is one of 17 people — including three incumbents — running for six at-large seats on the city's board of aldermen.

Letter to the editor: Race for Middlebury board makes for tough choice

I wish I could vote for both Esther Thomas, who I helped recruit, and Andy Hooper, my good neighbor, on Middlebury selectboard for the one-year seat for which they are competing. I will have to choose.
It is healthy to have such a robust choice. Esther brings a fresh, encouraging and open voice to our diversity efforts in this critical time of this focus. Andy brings local government experience serving on Montpelier’s selectboard and now on Middlebury committees, especially on our library board, working to sustain this essential town asset. You’ll need to decide on Middlebury’s priority for this year, knowing that the following year ushers in more opportunities to seek election to the selectboard.

IDAHO FALLS — It was December 1918 when a heartbreaking obituary was posted in The Teton Peak Chronicle about two young mothers who had contracted a lethal disease.
Pearl Willard, 26, and Myrtle Foster, 24, lay on their death beds in separate homes in St. Anthony, but their last thoughts were of each other.
“A peculiar incident occurred just before the death of these two sisters who lived about two blocks from each other,” the newspaper article stated. “Just before she died, Mrs. Myrtle Foster said: ‘Come on, Pearl, and go with me.'”
