  1857 (dated)         1 : 920000 Description A scarce 1857 Dirección de Hidrografía nautical chart or maritime map of Jamaica, the Little Cayman Islands, and Southern Cuba. Centered on Pendro Bank (Vibora), the map extends as far north as Nipe Bay on Cuba s north coast, and as far west as Little Cayman. The seas to the south are largely empty, but the Serrana Bank atoll in the western Caribbean is noted. Manuscript Voyage The track of an unknown Spanish voyage that took place in April 1867 is traced. The voyage stops at Kingston, Jamaica, before proceeding westward along the south coast of Cuba. Another voyage - or perhaps the same voyage in February (either before or after) sails northwest towards the Placer de la Vivora, where it mysteriously terminates.

Coverage extends roughly from St. Augustine to Cuba, and from the Bay of St. Andres (Saint Andrew Bay) to Rum Cay and I. Conception. There is very little inland detail, but the Florida Keys, Tampa Bay, and Biscayne Bay are well mapped - with notes identifying water sources. The routes of several voyages influential in preparing the map are noted, for the most part, undertaken between 1794 and 1820. The Cape Florida lighthouse near Miami, constructed in 1825, is also noted. The general shape of Florida is consistent with maps of the period, including an exaggerate

Centered on Hispaniola, the map covers from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to the Equator, and from the Pacific coast of Central America to the mouth of the Amazon River. Manuscript notates throughout follow the 1867 voyage of a Spanish ship. 1867 Voyage in ManuscriptManuscript annotation in pencil trace in detail the 1867 voyage of a Spanish ship from Cadiz to Cuba and the West Indies. The ship first makes landfall in the Virgin Islands, before stopping at Porto Rico, then skirting the northern shore of Hispaniola, and moving on to Cuba, then Jamaica and the Spanish Main, stopping at Cartagena (Colombia) and Valencia (Venezuela).
