Bellmont Middle School eighth graders earned state-level accolades with their wildlife watercolor paintings in Wildlife Forever's Fish Art Contest and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Junior Duck Stamp Contest, according to a news release.
Their accomplishments are more impressive considering they are beginner watercolor wildlife painters who use kindergarten paint sets, the release said. It noted the students learn about conservation, specie biomes, anatomy and mixing and layering colors.

The Cal football team, with only two commitments so far to the class of 2022, is unsurprisingly not listed among the fist SI All-American top-25 recruiting classes.
That list was released today and many of the usual suspects occupy the top spots. No. 1 is Ohio State, followed by LSU, Georgia and Notre Dame.
Oregon, which already has eight verbal commitments, is the top-rated Pac-12 team at No. 16. USC, at No. 24, is the conference’s only other representative.

Two Carroll High And Two Carroll Middle School Students Move On To National Level Of History Day Competition

Two students from Carroll High School and two from the Carroll Middle School have qualified for the National History Day Contest to be held from Sunday, June 13 to Saturday, June 19 virtually. This is the second year the contests on the local and national level have been moved to a digital format with the state competition having been held from April 15 to April 26 with final results posted on April 30. “National History Day is a challenging program that provides Iowa students opportunities to grow and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives,” says Susan Klower, administrator of the State Historical Society of Iowa. “We congratulate our national finalists and wish them all the best as they represent our state at the national level.” Sixty-three Iowa students will participate in that national competition, including Madeline Parrott and Sophia Polking from Carroll High, who received top honors in the Senior Group Performance Category with “Communication from the Coop: How the Allied Troops Used Pigeons to Help Win WWII.” Bailey Bowman and Analia Ayala from the Carroll Middle School will be presenting their winning piece from the Junior Group Exhibit, “I have a Dream: Communicating a Message of Civil and Economic Rights and an End to Racism in the United States.” All four winners are students of Kelly Borchers. National History Day is really a year-long academic program that challenges students to research, develop and present papers, exhibits, documentaries, websites and performances about historical topics related to an annual theme. This year’s theme is “Communicating History: The Key to Understand.”
