Leaders of two organizations that provide services to Clackamas County's homeless population want to correct the record on some statements made last week by Commissioner Mark Shull following a 'fact-finding' tour he took of encampments along the Springwater Corridor.
On Tuesday, April 27, Shull told fellow county commissioners that he had some new ideas for how to approach the housing problem after he visited with some homeless individuals and heard their stories. Two of Shull's specific claims gave pause to both Debra Mason, executive director of Clackamas Service Center, and Brandi Johnson, executive director of LoveOne Community.

Many elected officials, Clackamas County organizations and members of the public calling for Commissioner Mark Shull's resignation have essentially asked, "What if voters knew beforehand?"
Most recently, during the public-comment period of Board of County Commissioners' meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28, a citizen said if voters had known about the racially and sexually denigrating statements Shull made, incumbent Ken Humberston would have won the November election.
Reed Harvey, a Milwaukie resident and business owner, told Shull "if your comments had come out before the election, you would not have been elected. You are allowed to make these statements as a private citizen, but you ran for elected office, and therefore you are being held accountable."

A coalition of community members representing metro-area Muslim residents and other marginalized groups held a press conference Thursday afternoon to renew calls for Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull to resign.
Shull — who recently came under scrutiny for racist, transphobic, anti-immigrant and Islamophobic statements made on his personal Facebook page — has doubled down on some of his comments in recent days. During a Board of County Commissioners meeting Thursday, Jan. 21, Shull incorrectly stated that Muslim people believe in Sharia Law over the U.S. Constitution. His comments followed nearly 45 minutes of public testimony in which community members unleashed scathing calls for his resignation.

During a special Wilsonville City Council meeting Thursday, Jan. 14, the council agreed to allow Mayor Julie Fitzgerald to sign a letter calling for the resignation of Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull for Islamophobic, transphobic, anti-immigrant and racist comments he made on social media that have surfaced this week.
Fitzgerald and three councilors voted to approve the motion while Councilor Ben West abstained from the vote.
Lake Oswego Mayor Joe Buck distributed the letter this week to Clackamas County representatives and many of these elected officials already had signed the letter by the time of the meeting.

New Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull is in the hot seat after a blog created by a local resident highlighted more than a dozen posts he's made to his personal Facebook page espousing anti-immigrant, Islamophobic and transphobic sentiments.
The blog "Documenting Mark Shull's Racism" was created by Cris Waller, a Jennings Lodge resident and Oregon House District 40 leader for the county's Democratic Party. The website highlights quotes and screenshots of around 20 posts made by Shull during the past two years representing views that Islam and Muslim people are a threat to America, and, on occasion, seemingly calling for violence.
