India: Government Raids Targeting Critics

Indian authorities are using politically motivated allegations of tax evasion and financial irregularities to silence human rights activists, journalists, and other critics of the government, Human Rights Watch said today. In September 2021, government financial officials have carried out raids in Srinagar, Delhi, and Mumbai on journalists’ homes, news offices, an actor’s premises, and the home and office of a human rights activist.

Srinagar: Two journalists in Srinagar were allegedly manhandled by the Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday when an incident of stone-pelting broke out outside the Jamia Masjid.
The 619-year-old mosque in the city has been a political citadel of Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who was expected to be released from his 19-month long house detention on March 5, before authorities decided against the move, prompting an outcry from his supporters.

CPJ urges India to drop charges against Kashmiri journalists | Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF)

The Committee to Protect Journalists, New York-based non-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes press freedom and defends the rights of journalists, has called upon the Indian government to drop investigations into the work of journalists Mir Junaid, Sajad Gul and Yashraj Sharma and allow them to report without interference.
On January 30, Indian police in occupied Jammu and Kashmir opened criminal investigations into Sharma, a reporter at The Kashmirwalla news website, and Junaid, a reporter at The Kashmiriyat news website, on the fake charge of incitement.
Fahad Shah, editor-in-chief of The Kashmirwalla, and Qazi Shibli, news editor of The Kashmiriyat, both spoke to CPJ over phone and informed the global journalist protection body about the concocted charges leveled against Kashmiri journalists by Indian police in the territory.

Srinagar: Mir Junaid, a young Kashmiri journalist, is troubled by thoughts of landing up in jail for a ‘mistake’ he apparently hasn’t committed. “What is my crime?” said Junaid in a gloomy voice, “I did what I learnt in the classroom, which is to report a story with utmost honesty.”
But the 21-year-old multimedia journalist may well find himself behind bars, if the authorities in Kashmir have their way. On January 30, the J&K Police booked Junaid for “inciting violence” and “provoking rioting”, along with another journalist, Yashraj Sharma, in an FIR (06/2021).

No freedom for press and platform in Kashmir: Farooq Rehmani - Kashmir Global

No freedom for press and platform in Kashmir: Farooq Rehmani
February 24, 2021 By Hassan
Islamabad: The Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani, has said that Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir is facing the darkest period of its history as not even an iota of freedom exists for press and platform in the territory.
Muhammad Farooq Rehmani in a statement issued in Islamabad said India is suppressing the popular Kashmir freedom movement but the sparks can’t be extinguished by any means. He said that in the eyes of the Modi regime and its leaders press must be turned into dead body with a good coffin and platform must be exclusively handled by the Hindutva rulers to leave no space for any dissent whatsoever. He said in the past to intimidate and frighten the people in general and free-lance journalists or reporters including the photojournalists, some were forcibly disappeared and others were gunned down and brutally murdered in or outside their offices in Srinagar and other towns. Thus newspapers were showed red light to be cautious and journalism faded in its hay days, although some brave voices defended the principles of free journalism against controlled and censored scripts, he added.
