Editorial: Vaccination map shows rural Virginia falling behind

That’s not a good thing for Southwest and Southside Virginia.
We’re all familiar with election maps of the past few decades — one party’s color for localities in the urban crescent, another party’s color for the rest of the state, particularly rural Southwest and Southside. And we all know who’s usually been on the losing end of that.
The state’s vaccination map — you can find it on the Virginia Department of Health’s COVID-19 page — isn’t about winning and losing. It’s about winning and winning. The more people who get vaccinated, wherever they are, the more we all win — and the closer we are to getting society back to normal.

Editorial: Rural Virginia leads the way on vaccinations

Today is Opening Day for Major League Baseball and, for many, the unofficial start of spring.
It will still be an unusual Opening Day — only the Texas Rangers, playing at home in a state that values personal liberty over public safety, will allow full capacity. Most will allow only 20% to 30% of the seats to be occupied. The Toronto Blue Jays can’t even play at home. Last year they were effectively the Buffalo Blue Jays. This year they’ll play their first two homestands at Dunedin, Florida, and then see how things are. Who would have ever thought we’d see the Canadian border closed?

Editorial: Will we see a new type of Republican emerge?

After the planet Uranus was discovered in 1781, astronomers realized that its orbit could only be explained if there was another, yet unseen, planet somewhere beyond it. Based on that, the great French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier publicly predicted the existence — and location — of the planet we now know as Neptune, making it the first planet predicted before it was ever seen.
In that same vein, today we predict the emergence of a type of politician we have yet to see — one that will likely emerge from rural America, perhaps even rural Virginia.
Before we get to that point, let’s work through the political math. When the parties started realigning in the ‘60s and ‘70s, we in the South saw a new type of Democrat arise. Those Democrats declared themselves to be “socially liberal but fiscally conservative” — signaling that they were not the segregationists of a previous generation but weren’t radical enough to alarm the business community. This was the formula that led to the election of Democrats such as Charles Robb, Gerald Baliles and Douglas Wilder in the 1980s — and ultimately to Mark Warner in 2001. We don’t hear that phrase as much anymore, but there certainly is such a species, even if they are no longer as numerous as they once were.

More than $3.8 million in Community Development Block Grant funding will support projects benefitting more than 1,400 low- to moderate-income Virginians throughout six Rural Virginia communities.
Three projects will be funded through a second round of CDBG Community Improvement Grants, which are awarded through a competitive process that evaluated each project for demonstrated need, applicant readiness, capacity, and benefit to the community.
