In setback to Trump ally, Pennsylvania county will not comply with vote probe

3 Min Read
(Reuters) - One of the three Pennsylvania counties asked to provide access to voting machines for a Republican lawmaker’s probe of the 2020 election has decided it cannot comply due to a directive from the state’s top election official, the county’s solicitor told Reuters.

Tioga County’s three Republican commissioners met on Tuesday and determined that acting Secretary of State Veronica Degraffenreid was within her authority in directing counties not to allow third parties to access their election equipment, according to the solicitor, Chris Gabriel.

After 11 seasons on
NCIS: LA, Renee Felice Smith said goodbye to the CBS procedural on Sunday's finale, which also marked co-star Barrett Foa's final episode.
All episode long, Smith's Nell grappled with the idea of permanently taking over Hetty's position as operations manager, a job she's unofficially held for much of the season. And when it came time to make a final decision about her future at NCIS, she chose to take a risk: Relocate to Tokyo with Foa's Eric and head up a new office there.

Bookworm: 'This Summer' is just right for your next long weekend

Bookworm: ‘This Summer’ is just right for your next long weekend
Thinking about getting a dog, read these titles first
Terri Schlichenmeyer
$28, $37 Canada; 432 pages
This summer is going to be the best one ever. You've got dozens of things planned: time with friends and family, a weekend getaway or two, cookouts, parades, a neighborhood party, your schedule is packed already. Yep, this will be a summer you'll never forget; as in the new novel, “That Summer” by Jennifer Weiner, that alone could be a good thing or a bad thing.
Daisy Shoemaker knew she shouldn't snoop but she couldn't help it: when she started getting emails that were meant for a woman with a slightly different (but very similar) address, she couldn't help but peek.

Editor’s note: In honor of International Women’s Day, we’ll be rolling out a week’s worth of stories — each day from March 8-14 — that celebrate and showcase contributions women have made to the sport, lifestyle and culture of surfing. (And yeah: we’ll continue to do so in the weeks and months ahead.)
Last summer was the weirdest summer in recent memory on a bunch of levels. The one constant, dependable thing? Lower Trestles delivering ultra-consistent surf at any hint of south swell. The above edit showcases some of the best high performance surfing by the solid crew of girls who posted up at San Clemente’s famed saltwatery skatepark, including Tia Blanco, Caroline Marks, Malia Ward, Alyssa Spencer, Zoey Kaina and more.

Many have asked the question, “when do we get to stop talking about the pandemic?”  Well, North Louisiana found an answer, albeit perhaps only temporary: during a weeklong snowstorm.  If the COVID-19 pandemic and the events of this month have taught me anything it is that, in life, control is an illusion!
The illusion of control is the tendency for human beings to believe they can control or at least influence outcomes they demonstrably have no influence over.  In 1975, Ellen Langer, a Harvard psychologist, coined the term “illusion of control.”  According to Langer, as humans “taking some action leads people to feel a sense of control over a situation, and that feels good, rather than just being a passive bystander.  Doing something typically feels better than doing nothing.”  This is true even when the action may have no result or, in other words, is only a placebo.

Researchers: No cruise ships in 2020 gave Glacier Bay's whales 'room to roam'

National Park Service wildlife biologist Chris Gabriele says the national park normally gets more than 600,000 visitors each year.
“Most of those on cruise ships,” she said.
But then the coronavirus pandemic erased Alaska’s entire 2020 cruise season. That made the waters a lot quieter. And the region’s humpback whales took notice.
“We saw them out in the middle of the channels, taking naps, socializing, feeding with others,” Gabriele told a panel at a December 9 meeting of the American Geophysical Union. “I heard a lot of long exchanges between the whales including what I think may have been a mother and calf.”
