The Day - Leave Mystic intersection as it is - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published May 19. 2021 5:38PM
Regarding David J. Evans letter about the Mystic intersection at Jerry Browne Road and Coogan Boulevard: Reevaluation would be a waste of time and money, seeing as how there is nothing wrong with this intersection, as long as people stop at the stop signs and take their turns proceeding. The accident happened almost a tenth of a mile up the road, not at the intersection, and was caused by a 19-year-old texting and driving. Nobody of any age should be texting while driving.
The intersection had nothing to do with it.

The Day - Time to reevaluate 'awkward intersection' in Mystic after fatal crash - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published April 30. 2021 12:01AM
The Day of April 23 reported the death of a woman in a crash “on Coogan Boulevard...near the intersection with Jerry Browne Road.” Locals can confirm that this is an awkward intersection as a result of adding the entrance to the Hartford Healthcare building. That created a four-way intersection best described as an X rather than a cross.
At a hearing held as part of the development of the Perkins Farm property, a police officer reported that the volume of traffic at this intersection did not warrant traffic lights. Among others, I questioned his decision based on the increased traffic that was inevitable with the advent of Hartford Healthcare and the development of substantial residential capacity. I also pointed out the unique shape of the intersection was potentially confusing as traffic built up. I recommended that, at minimum, the police should review the traffic load once development was completed.

The Day - Masonicare will require all employees to get COVID-19 vaccine - News from southeastern Connecticut

Mystic — Masonicare, which has three senior living communities in Connecticut, including one off Coogan Boulevard, announced Wednesday that it is requiring all of its 800 employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine by June 30.
During a virtual interview with The Day, Masonicare President and CEO J.P. Venoit said it was the right thing for his organization to do. Masonicare's decision comes as many similar organizations involved in senior living and health care have urged their employees to get the vaccine but have not required it.
"We really felt it was our obligation to do this for our residents. That obligation weighs heavily on us," he said. "The last thing we want is for one of our employees to come in and give it to one of the residents or to another employee."
