Gaia: Popular art exhibition returns to Greenwich | This Is Local London

A popular art exhibition, which aims to instil the same feeling astronauts get when they see the Earth from space, has returned to Greenwich.
Following a sold-out installation in summer 2020, the jaw-dropping Gaia is returning to the Old Royal Naval College, starting this week.
Gaia will be displayed in the Painted Hall for a month, including late night openings.
The monumental sculpture by Luke Jerram rotates slowly while suspended in mid-air, an exact scale replica of Earth made using NASA imagery.
The artwork aims to inspire a sense of the ‘Overview Effect’ that astronauts experience when they see Earth from space – feelings of awe, and an understanding of the interconnection of all life, particularly profound after a year when many people have been unable to connect with others due to the pandemic.

Colin MacKenzie: The almost forgotten Scot who changed how the world saw India

THE British Empire may have been defunct for decades, save its septic presence in the deluded mindsets of many English exceptionalists and comparatively few Scottish Unionists, but it can nevertheless never be denied that Scots played more than their fair share in developing and maintaining that empire.
I have shown in past columns how Scottish soldiers, engineers, doctors and administrators were key people in the empire project from its inception and, in the latter half of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century, Scots achieved high positions and great influence in the military in particular.

After a year of trepidation, three kidney transplant teenagers came out of cocooning on Thursday, April 8, when they attended Beaumont Hospital for an unprecedented cause for celebration.
The former patients at Temple Street Children’s Hospital are among the first in the revised Group 4 classified to be in the ‘very high-risk’ to receive their second and final ‘shot in the arm’ of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, against COVID-19.  They included 16-year-old Gearoid Wrafter from Offaly.
With the changes that were brought in last month, revised group 4 was extended from 18-69 years to include 16 and 17-year-olds. With the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine being the only one currently approved for 16 and 17-year-olds the three teens were added to the list and their vaccination will now allow them to return to school with a greater sense of confidence.
