Auburn budget appears to pass, board race too close to call

The Auburn Enlarged City School District s proposed budget appears to have passed, but affidavits will need to be counted. The results came in around 10:30 p.m. that Auburn s proposed spending plan had 1,442 yes votes and 1,266 no votes. There are 204 affidavits that have not been counted as of Tuesday night. The district is set to count those Wednesday morning. It s such a close race, Auburn Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo said. We ll know more in the morning. Thank you to everyone who showed up and voted today. The unofficial results show more at least one board of education newcomer upsetting an incumbent. Eight candidates were running for three three-year seats. The unofficial tally shows incumbent Ian Phillips (1,032) in the lead, followed by Matteo Bartolotta (1,024) and 16-year incumbent Salvatore Sam Giangreco (974). The third incumbent who was running, Kathleen Rhodes, received 892 votes.

Auburn teachers union endorsed two school board candidates, district s proposed budget

The Auburn Teachers Association endorsed two candidates in the district s highly contested school board race, and publicly backs the proposed budget. Union president Justin Herrling said the group endorses Matteo Bartolotta and board incumbent Ian Phillips. They are two of eight candidates vying for three three-year board positions. Bartolotta owns Nino s Pizzeria in Auburn and other small businesses. Phillips, who first came onto the board in 2018, is a New York State United Teachers union employee and chairman of the Cayuga County Democratic Committee. Herrling said the association felt Barolotta and Phillips would be the best champions for students and the faculty and the district. Herrling said he believed the district s advocacy committee, which was first suggested by Phillips and formed in summer 2018 to lobby for state aid, is one of the reasons why Auburn is set to get an increase this year.

Auburn names panelists who will consider high school renaming

AUBURN — The Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education approved more than 30 people from a variety of backgrounds to sit on a committee that will review the possible renaming of Auburn High School. The 36-person panel will review suggestions from the public and bring a recommendation to the district. The school board approved the panel at its meeting Tuesday night. In January, some high school students launched a campaign to rename the school after Harriet Tubman, the iconic abolitionist and former Auburn resident. Students efforts included a petition that was presented to the district. Later that month, the board voted on a resolution to explore and possibly begin the process of renaming a school building.
