Emissions crackdown: Government plots four all-electric prisons

Government solar push continues as MoJ announces thousands of panels to be installed

Published: 17 May 2021, 11:26 By: Lessons will be learnt from the construction of other prisons in the UK currently such as HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire (pictured) to help cut carbon in both construction and operation. Image: gov.uk. The Ministry of Justice is to develop thousands of solar panels across four new prisons being built in England. It has announced that the new sites will be ‘all-electric’, utilising heat pumps instead of gas for heating, a range of energy efficiency measures such as smart lighting and solar technology in order to reduce energy demand. Over the next 60 years, this is expected to cut £100 million in energy costs, as well as reducing carbon emissions by 85% compared to other prisons already under construction.

Pandemic helps Bam cut carbon emissions ahead of schedule

Pandemic helps Bam cut carbon emissions ahead of schedule The impact of the pandemic helped Bam Construct substantially reduce its CO2 emissions in 2020, the company has said, cutting emissions to 45 per cent below a benchmark set in 2015. The benchmark level was set in 2015 when Bam Construct gave itself five years to trim emissions by 25 per cent. It achieved that goal early, however, recording a 27 per cent cut by 2018, and further reductions thereafter. Bam Construct head of sustainability Jesse Putzel said: “We were among the first to have targets approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative. By 2019, we had reduced emissions by 34 per cent.”

New prisons to go green with solar energy and mini-nature reserves, Justice Secretary announces

New prisons to go green with solar energy and mini-nature reserves, Justice Secretary announces Four new prisons will get a green makeover to be carbon neutral and cut fuel bills by half to help meet UK s climate change targets by 2050 15 May 2021 • 9:38am Old style prisons are set to get a green makeover Prisons are to go green by generating their energy from solar panels and creating mini-nature reserves to promote biodiversity.   The next generation of prisons - starting with four to be built over the next six years - will use heat pumps, energy efficient lighting and thousands of solar panels to cut fuel bills by half and carbon emissions by at least 85 per cent compared with current designs.
