Greater Presence of Family Physicians, Midwives May Be Key Component to Decreasing Cesarean Delivery Rates Surgical cesarean births can expose new mothers to a range of health complications, including infection, blood clots and hemorrhage. As part of Healthy People 2020 and other maternal health objectives, the state of California exerted pressure to reduce cesarean deliveries, and statewide organizations established quality initiatives in partnership with those goals. In this study, researchers from Stanford University and the University of Chicago examined unit culture and provider mix differences on hospital and delivery units to identify characteristics of units that successfully reduced their cesarean delivery rates. Study Reveals New Hope for Men With Common Urinary Issues A new systematic review of evidence recommends the use of behavioral self-management treatments for common urinary issues experienced by upwards of 70 percent of older men. Common symptoms include trouble urinating, increased frequency and incontinence. These symptoms can have a substantial negative impact on sleep, social functioning and quality of life. Several guidelines recommend self-management techniques like health education, advice on fluid intake, and bladder retraining; however, in practice, self-management is often excluded from the menu of treatment options that include medication and surgery. Researchers at Bond University s Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare found that self-management interventions reduced the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms. New Leadership Team at Family Medicine Residency Program

On Jan. 4th, the Dr. Rebecca Collins is the new Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Collins will lead alongside newly promoted Associate Program Director, Dr. Samantha Rai and Dr. London Muse, who was promoted to Associate Program Director in 2019 and is also Medical Director at Sleepy Hollow Open Door.  These changes usher in a new leadership structure for the program. Rebecca Collins Dr. Collins completed her family medicine training at Columbia University’s Center for Family and Community Medicine, medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and public health training at A.T. Still University. She is one of the founding faculty members of this residency program. Over the course of her career in both academic and community health center administration, she has concentrated her work efforts on providing high quality, comprehensive healthcare to underserved communities.
