It was 1948 and their first attempt was at a church roughly eight blocks from their home. Once there, Lucy and James West were told their names were not listed. The couple was sent to a second location.

Raphael Warnock: What to know about new Georgia senator

Raphael Warnock was projected to defeat incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in Georgia's Senate runoff race, which would send the Savannah-raised pastor to Washington.
After nearly all votes were counted, The Associated Press projected Warnock as the winner. He led Loeffler by more than 54,000 votes and 1.2 percentage points, which is not within the recount margin.
Here's what to know about the newest Georgia senator:
A historic win
Warnock is not only the first Black man elected to the U.S. Senate from Georgia but also the first Democrat from the state in more than 20 years. The last Democrat to represent Georgia in the Senate was Max Cleland, who was elected in 1996.
