Somerset County NJ launches commission to attract film production

During the pandemic, Somerset County saw a 51% decline in its tourism industry sales, making it one of the hit hardest counties in New Jersey. Tourism revenue fell from $1.3 million in 2019 to $612,000 in 2020, and the number of visitors to the county dropped 27.8% from 3 million to 2.2 million.
“The Somerset County Film Commission will highlight all our amenities to the industry, but more importantly bring opportunities to open and expand businesses that create jobs for our residents,” said County Commission Director Shanel Y. Robinson. “With everything Somerset County has to offer and the pandemic slowing down, now is the perfect time to create the Film Commission and ensure we bring in our fair share of New Jersey’s booming film production industry.”

Fifty percent of adults fully vaccinated in Somerset County -

A drive-thru vaccination clinic at Rutgers Plaza in Franklin Township.
Somerset County officials announced Monday that 50% of adults in the county are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and 70 percent of adults in the county have received one vaccine dose.
The county has been successful at getting people vaccinated by offering programs like mobile vaccine clinics and drive-thru vaccination clinics. Appointments are available at drive-thru clinics in Franklin Township and at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg.
“This is encouraging news that so many of us have been vaccinated, but we can’t take our foot off the gas,” said Somerset County Commissioner Sara Sooy. “The way we will get back to a more normal and open way of living is by getting an even greater percentage of adults vaccinated. I encourage any resident who is waiting or is on the fence to take advantage of our clinics throughout the county and get vaccinated this week.”

Somerset County NJ tax rate rising by less than 1%

MyCentralJersey.com
SOMERVILLE – Somerset County's property tax rate will be going up less than 1 percent under a budget introduced by the county commissioners.
That increase means the property tax for county purposes on a  home assessed at $455,373, the country average, will increase by $55.13. That does not include any increases for local school or municipal taxes.
Though the $255.12 county budget is increasing by 1.25 percent, the tax increase is being held down by a 2.38 percent increase in the overall value of assessed property in the county.
“The 2021 budget that we have created strikes the balance by being compassionate yet fiscally responsible," County Commission Director Shanel Y. Robinson said. "This budget ensures that we continue to provide all current services, while being able to add additional services such as free COVID testing and vaccinations for Somerset County residents.”

Somerset County NJ begins vaccinating homebound residents

MyCentralJersey.com
The Somerset County Department of Health has started sending vaccination teams to the homes of residents who, for medical or other reasons, are unable to travel to receive their COVID-19 vaccine.
The nurse-led teams initially are vaccinating homebound residents in Somerville, Raritan and Manville this week and will then move to additional municipalities.
“We are thrilled to finally be receiving increased allocations of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine so we can continue our efforts to ensure Somerset County’s most vulnerable residents are protected against COVID,” said Commission Deputy Director Sara Sooy, who accompanied one of the teams to visit Maria Page of Manville.

BRIDGEWATER – Over 50 students and around 150 adults rallied Saturday afternoon to support the Asian-American community in the township in the wake of a pandemic-spurred growth in hate crimes directed at them.
The crowd  gathered outside the Bridgewater Municipal Complex, holding handmade signs that read, "Protect Asian Lives,” "I am not a virus,” and "Racism is a virus,” while some chanted, "Stop Asian hate!" and "It ends today!”
The non-partisan rally was organized by Bridgewater-Raritan High School students, who said they were inspired to hold the rally "to remember the victims of the (Atlanta) shooting and also to be a sign to the community that although this didn't happen in Bridgewater, New Jersey ... we're standing in solidarity with everyone (in the community)."
