On this day in 1936, the first practical helicopter, the Focke-Wulf FW 61, took its first flight piloted by Ewald Rohlfs. This quiz is about helicopters
Flying machines
1. Who is regarded as having designed the first helicopter, often described as an ‘aerial screw’ in the late 15th century? The drawings are in his notes, and he apparently made small flying models but none survived.
2. With the NATO code name ‘Hip’ and more than 17,000 built around the world, which is the world’s most produced helicopter, still a workhorse in the Indian Air Force?

£274-million training boost for RAF
Pilots and engineers who operate the UK’s C-17 Globemaster aircraft are to benefit from world-leading interactive training, following a £274-million contract award.
Awarded for the next 19 years, the contract with Boeing Defence UK will provide unique synthetic training courses for RAF personnel who operate the aircraft until 2040 and will support around 30 UK jobs at the International Training Centre (ITC) in Farnborough.
Alongside the continued training for pilots on the interactive C-17 flight simulators, from 2023 RAF trainees will also benefit from two new pieces of equipment in a purpose-built facility. Maintainers will be provided with engineering training so they can diagnose faults and practice repairs without having to work on the live aircraft.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new memorial for American military members killed in the Global War on Terror will become virtual instead of being housed in a Kansas City, Kansas, museum.
The American Fallen Warrior Memorial Foundation announced it is no longer pursuing a large, physical memorial and museum. While the nonprofit hopes to have some amount of a physical presence in the area, the majority of its information will now be online and accessible worldwide.

As the Nushagak braces for another large sockeye run, managers seek to preserve fragile king runs

Fifty-one million sockeye are forecast to return to Bristol Bay this summer.
If that holds, commercial fishermen will be able to harvest around 37 million reds. That’s 13% more than the average harvest of the past decade.
But concerns remain about the numbers of Chinook, or king salmon, in the Nushagak District, on the west side of Bristol Bay, and that tasks the biologists who manage the fishery with a complicated balancing act.
Faced with another huge sockeye run this summer, managers in the Nushagak District say they will try to allow fishermen to harvest the sockeye and also conserve Chinook.

KENAI - Alaska will acquire about a half square mile of habitat along the Kasilof River through a federal grant.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved a grant of about $340,000 for the project through its National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant program, the Peninsula Clarion reported Tuesday.
The total cost of the project is estimated at around $500,000.
The fish and wildlife service program aims to “protect, restore and enhance coastal wetland ecosystems and associated uplands” across the country.
The project will protect about .44 square miles of coastal wetland habitat in the Kasilof River Flats, including 2.25 miles of river shoreline.

Dam Removal Simpson Pt 1 - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

Dam Removal Simpson Pt 1
Thursday Mar 4th, 2021
I’m Bob Larson. Breaching four dams on the Lower Snake River to save the Chinook salmon runs has been a decades-long controversy. Opponents claim it will cost millions in lost power generation, grain barging, and irrigation.
Then, Representative Mike Simpson threw fuel on the fire last month when the Idaho Republican proposed removing the earthen berms around the dams to let the rivers and the salmon run free, saying farmers will be okay …
SIMPSON … “The number of bushels of grain going down the river on barges right now are decreasing. They’re less than they used to be. They are decreasing, because we’re finding alternatives to the transportation. And, to say that there’s not any alternatives out there is just to throw our hands in the air and say, okay, the salmon are dead. What we’re doing now is what we’re going to do for the next 50 years, minus the fact that the judge is going to intervene at some point in time.”

U.S. Army's CH-47 Chinook Helicopters to Have Spare Engines Until 2024

U.S. Army’s CH-47 Chinook Helicopters to Have Spare Engines Until 2024

In 1962, Boeing introduced the CH-47 Chinook, that funky-looking, tandem-rotor heavy lift machine we are so used to see flying over the battlefields of America’s wars. It’s quite an old breed of helicopters, but one the American military is not planning of retiring anytime soon.

Throughout its life, the Chinook suffered many changes, but it pretty much stayed true to the engine family that powered it ever since conception. T55 is how the family is called; it was made first by Lycoming and presently by Honeywell Aerospace.
