GENEVA: Mountaineers who stumble across archaeological relics revealed by retreating glaciers in the Swiss Alps can now use a new app to log the location and help preserve their findings.
The southwestern Wallis region said Tuesday the
IceWatcher mobile phone application should help them collect and store glacial finds as quickly as possible.
Wallis contains several important glaciers, including the Aletsch, the largest in the Alps.

To effectively fight the global pandemic, rich countries like Switzerland should donate their surplus Covid-19 vaccines to poorer countries immediately, says Thomas Cueni, president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations.
“We won’t get out of the pandemic unless everyone is vaccinated,” Cueni told the
SonntagsZeitung newspaper, adding that a problem with distribution – and not production – of the vaccine was preventing poorer countries from inoculating their populations.
Pharmaceutical companies from Europe to Asia are capable of manufacturing 11 billion doses of the Covid vaccine by the end of 2021, said the Swiss national, who sits on the coordination committee of the Covax Initiative aimed at guaranteeing universal access to the vaccine.

Climate change has dramatically altered the Swiss Alp landscape – at a quicker pace than expected – as melting glaciers have created more than 1,000 new lakes across in the mountains, a study published recently showed.
The inventory of Swiss Glacial lakes showed that almost 1,200 new lakes have formed in formerly glaciated regions of the Swiss Alps since the end of the Little Ice Age around 1850.
Around 1,000 of them still exist today, according to the study published by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag).
