NORWICH Out of the 26 years that Social Studies Department Head Karen Cook has taught at Norwich Free Academy, there hasn’t been a student as “extraordinary” as Senior Karen Lau. “Out of any student I have had the pleasure of teaching, she’s the one who most believes she can make a difference in this world,” Cook said. Lau has been selected as one of two students to represent Connecticut in the 2021 United States Senate Youth Program, from March 14 to March 17. The program invites  student leaders from around the country to study the federal government and its leaders. The 104 participating students receive a $10,000 scholarship from The Hearst Foundations to continue their studies in history, government, and public affairs.
