Toroa chick death at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head

Last week, a 146-day-old male chick died after a routine supplementary feeding was carried out.
The rangers noticed the chick had laboured breathing after the feed. The bird’s condition deteriorated very quickly and unfortunately it died. The chick was underweight for its age and needed extra food to help it gain weight.
The chick was sent to Massey University for a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Department of Conservation (DOC) Supervisor Jim Watts says the necropsy found a sizeable piece of rocky material (resembling charcoal) stuck in chick’s trachea, which led to the chick asphyxiating.

Death of albatross chick after routine feed 'hard for the team' at Otago colony

It was sent to Massey University for a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death.
DOC supervisor Jim Watts said a sizeable piece of rocky material resembling charcoal was found to be stuck in the chick’s trachea, which caused it to asphyxiate.
It was not known how the chick ingested the rock, but its parent may have picked it up while fishing and fed it to the chick, he said.

The chick could have then regurgitated the material while being fed by DOC staff and inhaled it.

LaHood Gives Blood To Highlight Supply Shortage During Pandemic

Joe Deacon

U.S Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Peoria, is hoping to lead by example in urging people to donate blood as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic impacts supply.
LaHood made a donation of his own Tuesday at the newly renamed ImpactLife blood center on Glen Avenue in Peoria, noting how critical the blood supply is to the health care system.
“As we've seen over the last 15 months with COVID, blood donations are down 30-40% across the country,” said LaHood. “So I think it's important that we recognize that and encourage people to give blood.”
Previously known by three different regional names, ImpactLife is the not-for-profit community blood center serving more than 120 hospitals across Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin – including OSF HealthCare and UnityPoint Health in Peoria.

To the Editor

It is a great loss for the boys that are entitled to receive this honor.
I have been the Canton Legion Post 16 chairman since 1988 with Boys State.
First of all I want to express to Harold Rose, CHS History teacher, for all his help. Also to the many sponsors who have made it possible for the boys to go. Maybe next year?
Sincerely and Respectfully yours,
Jim Watts

Southern Downs farmers bear brunt of price hike

One Southern Downs farmers has lashed out over an expected fresh fruit and vegetable price hike in the fallout of an Australian worker shortage.
The prices of summer vegetables, stone and pome fruit, such as apples and pears will jump by 7 to 29 per cent this year and peak harvest period food such as table grapes are expected to record the highest price rises.
For Killarney farmer Jim Watts, the news wasn’t surprising.
“I think prices are going to get ridiculous at this present stage. I haven’t planted and I know a lot of farmers have done the same thing I’ve done,” he said.

"The challenges of the past 12 months have provided our YMCA with an opportunity to take a long, hard look at the programs we offer in the Joliet community. The Smith Family YMCA has proudly served residents of Joliet since 1978, but in recent years, its most impactful programs have operated outside of our YMCA walls and in the community," said Greater Joliet Area YMCA President and CEO Jim Watts.

Meet The Black Entrepreneur Who Created Kansas City Barbecue In The Early 1900s

KCUR 89.3
Two of the most famous Kansas City barbecue restaurants — Gates and Arthur Bryant’s — trace their style of barbecue directly back to Henry Perry, Kansas City's original barbecue king.
One of the first things you should know about Henry Perry is that he was equal parts pitmaster and entrepreneur.
To many, the reason for his success was simple: He knew how to smoke barbecue better than
anybody.
"His food had an aroma that stayed with you. And that's what made them want to come back to him," historian Sonny Gibson says. "They traveled from as far as Leavenworth, Kansas, and Omaha, Nebraska. They would come down just to eat his food."
