Being present for older adults in 2021 requires forethought and an understanding of how the pandemic has changed many aspects of daily life. Many older adults are emerging from a long period of isolation. Yet they remain concerned about their safety, as well as the safety of loved ones. When all parties are vaccinated, a hug goes a long way.
âWhen possible, physical touch is very much appreciated. Messages of love, that you, a family member, or grandchildren are all right, especially because of the way you were raised, are helpful,â said Dr. Doug Wilson, medical director for the palliative care service at Queen of the Valley Medical Center and a family physician at OLE Health.

When I retired from leading River School in 2014, later that school year there were two teen suicides in NVUSD in the space of eight days, an 8th-grade boy and a 10th grader. Those deaths shook me and, with Jeni Olsen, we started Village Napa, an advocacy group, to support the mental, social, and emotional well-being of young people. In the research Iâve done since then, Iâve discovered that suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents, among college students, and that 50% of millennials and 75% of Gen Zers have left their jobs due to mental health reasons.
