Jennifer Brooks used her column last Sunday ("Hey, Anoka County, listen, and listen good") to scoff at the idea that libraries should be a neutral environment and argues that institutions and people must make a "choice." She frames that choice in the stark terms of, "You stand with your neighbors or you stand against them."
But complex questions require nuance and discussion. A person can believe that the phrase "Black lives matter" is 100% true and still believe that the organization Black Lives Matter uses tactics and advances ideas that are wrong.

In "Hey, Anoka County, listen and listen good," (June 27) columnist Jennifer Brooks writes about the need for conversations. Conversations about important subjects like George Floyd's murder, the Derek Chauvin sentencing, the Black Lives Matter movement, bigotry, gun violence, diversity. She declares that "our differences have left us fractured and furious. Unable to unite against injustice."
Brooks angrily points to a memo from the management of the Anoka County Library, which apparently doesn't present diversity in way that suits her tastes. Brooks belittles the library leaders for encouraging "diversity on a broader spectrum" instead of hanging posters that celebrate Gay Pride or promote the Black Lives Matter organization.

In 2020, the Delaware Community Foundation awarded $31.2 million in community grants and scholarships, primarily from charitable funds established by individuals, families and corporate donors.
The 2020 giving – which had an impact on tens of thousands of Delawareans – represents a 35 percent increase over 2019 giving and a 112 percent increase over 2018 giving.
The increased giving in Delaware reflects national trends in 2020, as donors responded to the pandemic, shared the fruits of a strong stock market and took advantage of charitable giving tax incentives established through the CARES Act, DCF President & CEO Stuart Comstock-Gay said.
“Delawareans saw the need, and they stepped up,” Comstock-Gay said. “The DCF team worked hard to get the money into the community effectively and efficiently, and we are humbled that so many donors trust us to use our community knowledge and relationships to maximize the impact of their giving statewide.”

Jennifer Brooks describes her 20-year-old son, Hudson, as a free-spirited animal lover who loved to spend time at the beach.
“To lose Hudson was like losing a limb. I cannot function or think," she told the jury Monday at the B.C. Coroners Service's inquest into her son’s death. “A mother should never have to live without her child.”
Hudson Brooks was shot nine times by a Mountie outside the South Surrey RCMP detachment early in the morning on July 18, 2015.
Const. Elizabeth Cucheran was charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in December 2017, but those charges have been stayed.
