Junior Mike Pitman hit some big shots down the stretch and finished with 16 points to lead the Pembroke Academy boys’ basketball team to a season-opening 49-39 win on Wednesday night against Merrimack Valley.
Pembroke had been scheduled to play against Hillsboro-Deering, but the start of H-D’s season was delayed due to health concerns. MV stepped into the void to play against its Capital-area rival. PA and MV will play again on Jan. 25 and Jan. 28. Hillsboro-Deering is scheduled to open its season on Jan. 19 at Kearsarge.
The Pride went up early behind senior Griffin Wheeler (17 points), but the Spartans used an 8-0 second quarter run to take a lead they would hold for the rest of the game. Preston Wallis finished with nine points for PA, Alex Francoer had eight and Cooper Gilman connected on some late buckets to wind up with seven points.
