Darry Bernardo, a member of the national para chess team that finished fifth in the FIDE Olympiad for People with Disability last year, paced the Tams by scoring eighth out of nine on Board 4 that was highlighted by his shock win over International Master Harshit Raja from University of Missouri A. FEU’s team A, which also consists of Jeth Romy Morado, Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano, John Merill Jacutina and alternate Kristian Glen Abuton, actually finished tied for seventh with Greece’s National Technical University of Athens A, the United States’ St. Louis University A and Russia’s Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology A with 6.5 points apiece. ....
Published December 20, 2020, 1:46 PM April Joy Claros stunned third seed Martyna Starosta of Poland in their “Armageddon” tiebreak game to gatecrash into the quarterfinals of the girls’ Under-14 FIDE World Cadets and Youth Rapid Chess Championships Sunday. Seeded only 14th out of the 16 who made it to the knockout phase, the 13-year-old Claros beat Starosta in the second of their two-game duel to knot the count at 1-1 all and then won the deciding game with the black pieces in 55 moves of a Caro-Kann Defense to complete the shock win and advance to the quarters. It was a strong victory for Claros, who made it to the tournament via wildcard entry. ....
Published December 14, 2020, 2:35 PM Unrated King Whisley Puso downed Batsukh Anand of Mongolia in the seventh and final round to rule the open Under-12 division of the Asian qualifying stage of the FIDE World Cadets and Youth Rapid Chess Championship Sunday. Puso finished tied with Chinese Xiao Tong (QD) with six points apiece on five wins and two draws but the Sta. Rosa, Laguna native wound up with the higher tiebreak, 31-28, to claim the crown and one of the three spots in his age bracket in the world stage. It was a phenomenal effort for someone who came into the tournament as an underdog, having been one of the two of 37 participants in the age class without a FIDE rating. ....
