PETALING JAYA: No one will forget the way Viktor Axelsen of Denmark celebrated his Olympic Games men’s singles gold-medal victory on Monday.
He wept like a baby. He hugged his coach Kenneth Jonassen. He went on to exchange his shirt with Chen Long of China and they briefly spoke in Mandarin.
It was an emotional moment as the 27-year-old Axelsen had put his years of preparation, blood, sweat and tears into that spectacular final show en route to beating defending champion Chen Long 21-15, 21-12 in 51 minutes, to become only the second Dane in 25 years after Poul-Erik Hoyer to win an Olympics badminton gold.

Tokyo, Jul 25 (PTI) Top Indonesian shuttler Jonatan Christie has dedicated his first victory in the Olympics to his late elder brother Ivan, whose death changed his family forever and compelled him to briefly abandon his thriving badminton career.
The Asian Games gold medallist''s quest for a maiden appearance at the Games also took a backseat after Ivan died of COVID-19 earlier this year.

Little did he know that one day, he’d be squaring off against the world’s seventh-best men’s singles player at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
While Mahmoud, who began playing badminton with his sister at the age of seven, didn’t win against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, the 24-year-old is still proud of his achievement, scoring 14 points to Christie’s 21 in their second match at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.

Badminton: Zii Jia grateful for good sparring session with indie shuttler

Strong support: Lee Zii Jia says Liew Daren (pic, below) has been a big help to his Olympics preparations.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia, dead set on getting on the podium in his Olympics debut, is not the least perturbed by the lack of top quality sparring options.
On the contrary, the 23-year-old who stunningly won the All-England title in March, has only praise and appreciation for seasoned campaigner Liew Daren, who was recruited by head coach Hendrawan to specifically provide intense training ahead of the Tokyo Games.
It’s imperative that Zii Jia has strong sparring partners to train with considering there wasn’t any tournament available to play in since March.
