TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - The roads that lead to the beaches on Tybee have been a little busier this year, with thousands of people driving to the island every weekend since the end of March.
Tybee Island has always been a popular destination, but this year the travel season has started early. The city has added traffic controls to avoid gridlock in the busy parts of the island.
“If it stops here, it causes a ripple effect all the way back to Johnny Mercer,” said Tybee Island City Manager Shawn Gillen.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The weekend before St. Patrick’s Day brought in large crowds to some popular destinations in the Coastal Empire.
Despite canceled celebrations, both Savannah and Tybee Island dealt with an influx of visitors.
“Well, it was a busy weekend. We had a lot of people in Savannah. Beautiful weather, and a population both internally and external to our city that was COVID tired and ready to do something different,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson.

TYBEE GETS MERRY

The palm trees lining Tybrisa Street are bedecked with brilliant bulbs.
THE ICONICALLY quirky spirit of Tybee Island carries on through the holidays, when locals tool around this laid-back beach town in Christmas-themed golf carts to hit their favorite hangouts beneath towering palm trees glowing with starry bulbs.
To warmly welcome visitors to share in Tybee Island’s daze of holiday joy, this year the municipal government expanded its gift of citywide free parking to span from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. In 2019, free parking was provided for the two weeks around Christmas and New Year’s to boost local business, and the initiative’s success inspired this year’s extended parking-fee holiday, according to Tybee Island City Manager Shawn Gillen.
