TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - The roads that lead to the beaches on Tybee have been a little busier this year, with thousands of people driving to the island every weekend since the end of March.
Tybee Island has always been a popular destination, but this year the travel season has started early. The city has added traffic controls to avoid gridlock in the busy parts of the island.
“If it stops here, it causes a ripple effect all the way back to Johnny Mercer,” said Tybee Island City Manager Shawn Gillen.

Four Sedalia Firefighters Recognized for Life-saving Efforts
Four Sedalia Firefighters were recognized for their life-saving efforts at Monday night's City Council meeting.
Sedalia Fire Chief Greg Harrell and Deputy Fire Chief Matt Irwin accompanied the firefighters to the meeting, attended in person by the full Council for the first time in months.
Fire Chief Harrell explained that the SFD was called to 901 W. 3rd Street in the early afternoon hours of Feb. 11 to fight a two-story residential fire. Upon arrival, fire crews were advised there was still someone inside the burning apartment house.
Crews from Engine 1, led by Captain Greg Smith, stretched an inch-and-three-quarter hand line to the front of the residence and attempted to extinguish the fire to make entry.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - In a year where the nation is seeing it’s first-ever woman vice president, Columbus is also making history with Marie Harrell’s promotion Wednesday to deputy fire chief.
“It is 180 years plus in history for this department, for it to take until 2021 to name a female deputy chief is amazing in itself,” Harrell said.
Harrell’s new title makes history for the Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services department not only because she is the first woman in Columbus to ever hold the title, but also because this signifies the city’s dedication to include minorities in leadership positions.
