Teifi Cheese have bought two presses dating back to the 1880s. AN AWARD-winning Ceredigion cheese company have bought two presses dating back to the 19th century. Teifi Cheese have hailed the Thomas Corbett of Shrewsbury presses – manufactured in the 1880s – as ‘a marvellous piece of agricultural history’. The presses were used in the final stage of cheese-making to remove excess whey and shape the cheese to the mould. After two pressings, the cheese was wrapped in muslin and then linen, ready to be stamped and stored in a cool cheese room or in the farm loft. Thomas Corbett, of Shrewsbury, was an agricultural implement-maker of the industrial revolution. He established Perseverance Iron Works in 1864, from where he designed and produced award- winning agricultural implements and machinery of every kind including ploughs, chaff cutters and cheese presses.
