Ananda Birungi immigrated to Thornton from her home country of Uganda when she was 14. Her mother had begun the immigration process before Birungi was born and after over a decade, it was finally her familyâs turn to pursue the American dream. All Birungi knew of the U.S. she had seen in movies and television shows, but she soon found that the reality of America was little like her Hollywood expectations. Birungiâs parents struggled to find work while she struggled with her new identity as a Black American. âIt was hard seeing myself as a Black person for the first time in America and having an African accent,â Birungi said. âI felt so insecure.
