Analysts at Bank of America have attacked bitcoin as “exceptionally volatile” and “impractical” in a 17 March research note.
In the note, the analysts said there was “no good reason to own bitcoin unless you see prices going up”.
The analysts said the supply of the cryptocurrency was by design artificially constrained so demand swings are...

The Brazilian Stock Market's 20% Decline

S&P 500’s Annual Return Under Donald Trump Was 12%
The market did better only under Bill Clinton and Calvin Coolidge.
But like with any president, it’s hard to definitively credit or blame Trump for what the economy or the stock market did while he was in office. The 2017 corporate tax cuts didn’t have as large of an impact as many had expected, and didn’t result in a notable increase in business investment.
Tariffs on Chinese exports also didn’t result in the surging consumer prices that some had feared. They made imported items like washing machines temporarily more expensive and redirected some trade, but that was about it.

One of
Virgin Galactic Holding’s
largest shareholders, Abu Dhabi sovereign-wealth fund Mubadala Investment, reduced its stake in the aerospace and space-travel company.
Virgin Galactic (ticker: SPCE) stock has rocketed 28.2% so far in January, boosted by buzz for the sector after Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest filed documents to start a new space exchange-traded fund. In comparison, the
S&P 500 index,
a measure of the broader market, has only eked out a 0.3% gain in the new year.

Why a Correction Could Be Coming for Stocks

The stock market could experience a correction soon.
Prices already reflect a wallop of government spending and central-bank aid that can’t get much larger from here,
Bank of America
warns. Other market watchers are downbeat as well.
The S&P 500 entered Friday up about 1% year to date, but ended the day with a loss of 0.7%, bringing the year-to-date move to 0.3%. Stocks were down even after President-elect Joe Biden said he wants to spend an additional $1.9 trillion to tide over consumers and businesses until normality returns.
Meanwhile, valuations are high. The equity risk premium—the earnings yield on the average

Global Markets Push Higher Ahead of Yellen's Senate Testimony

CAC 40
was down 0.3% and Frankfurt’s
DAX
was down 0.2%.
The former Federal Reserve Chair’s testimony, which concluded midafternoon, gave Yellen the opportunity to sell President-elect Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion fiscal stimulus plan. Yellen emphasized the need to “defeat the pandemic” first before tackling the deficit, and bolster global confidence in the U.S. economy. She also warned that the nation faces “difficult months ahead” before it achieves widespread vaccination.
Yellen confirmed that no tax hikes or repeals of 2017’s legislation are on the table near-term, nor while the country struggles with the pandemic. Yet there was some surprise in the testimony, according to Max Gokhman, Head of Asset Allocation at Pacific Life Fund Advisors, regarding potential future changes. “Yellen said that the details of tax changes may be featured in this year’s infrastructure bill, which she is going to help draft. This could be setting up an ebullient market for a bit of a bull correction. Investors are more likely to get jolted when seeing details of the tax hikes, just as they got giddy in 2017 when the corporate tax cuts were announced.”

Ahead of Wednesday’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, U.S. investors will get a holiday-shortened week. It couldn’t come soon enough, amid all the chaos in Washington.

Big Contrarian Investor Sold Apple, Intel, and Microsoft Stock. Here's What It Bought.

Microsoft
(MSFT) stock by about a third, and initiated a relatively nominal stake in Chinese electric-vehicle maker
Nio
(NIO) in the fourth quarter. The firm disclosed the trades in a form it filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Hexavest, which is 49%-owned by
Eaton Vance
(EV), didn’t respond to a request for comment on the stock trades.
In November, Eaton Vance noted in its fiscal-fourth-quarter report that net outflows at Hexavest surged to $6.2 billion for the fiscal year ended Oct. 31, compared with $1.6 billion the previous year. Hexavest’s managed assets have shrunk to $5.8 billion at Oct. 31 from $13.4 billion a year earlier.

The Dow Dropped Exxon Mobil in August. But as Oil Prices Rise, So Does Its Stock.

Exxon Mobil
in August, the stock was trading under $40 and investors were betting that it would have to cut its dividend. One analyst even suggested that it merge with
Chevron
and change its name. But Exxon hasn’t faded into obscurity. Instead, the stock has started gaining new fans.
In just the past week, three analysts have upgraded Exxon to Buy ratings. One upgrade came from J.P. Morgan analyst Phil Gresh, who predicted the stock can rise to $56 from around $48.
Gresh admits he isn’t early to this call. The stock is up nearly 50% from its fall bottom, and recently rose for nine trading days in a row—a streak that ended on Friday on a report that the Securities and Exchange Commission was looking into Exxon’s valuation of some of its holdings. But Exxon still trails other oil producers.
