Companies have trouble filling jobs as states reopen during pandemic

NORFOLK, Va. — As more people get vaccinated and states continue to re-open, businesses are still having trouble filling the spots.
Career Engineer Francina Harrison told 13News Now it's a different scenario since the pandemic started. Remote work kicked in as COVID protocols took over.
But that can't last forever for many companies and some people are afraid to go back.
"Some still wear masks, some who don't. Some companies don't have an on-point policy about how to work now so there are some folks who are still checking out because they are still fearful," said Harrison.

Diners across the 757 are back in full force. That should be exciting news for business owners. Instead, it’s stressful, as many struggle to hire staff.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Restrictions are lifting, vaccines are flowing and diners across the 757 are back in full force.
That should be exciting news for business owners. Instead, it’s stressful, as many struggle to hire staff.
Pelon’s Baja Grill owner John Muscara was forced to close all three locations on Mondays and Tuesdays because he can’t find enough help.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Pelon’s Baja Grill has three locations in Hampton Roads: Ghent in Norfolk, the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and their newest restaurant in Red Mill.
Though they’re grateful to have many customers, they’ve decided to cut the operating hours due to lack of staffing.
“Before the pandemic started, we were open every single day of the week. We did make a decision to close on Mondays just to give our staff a little bit of a relief,” explained Tori Foster, General Manager of the Red Mill grill. “But recently, we decided to close on Tuesdays and then also shorten our hours on the weekends, closing that breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.”

Restaurants are on a hiring spree as COVID-19 recovery continues

Restaurants and bars hired 176,000 people in March, the biggest increase of any industry last month
As COVID-19 recovery continues and dining rooms head back to normal capacities, restaurants are ramping up hiring. Multiple chains, including regional McDonald’s restaurants and Sonic Drive-In, have announced hiring drives over the past month in response to growing demand at this point in the pandemic.
This trend is reflected by the latest hiring numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In March, restaurants and bars gained 176,000 jobs, down from February’s increased pace of 309,000 jobs. But despite the month-over-month slowdown, hospitality led the way in the March U.S. jobs report and had the largest increase of any industry, as economic activity resumes while the nationwide unemployment rate dropped to 6%.

BENTON, Ark. — The pandemic has changed how businesses have operated in ways they never thought they'd see.
"This has been the hardest year, for many reasons," Heather Baber-Roe, owner of Baja Grill in Benton, said. "You know, not just for us, but for other restaurants."
It wasn't just the main things you've heard many businesses struggle with.

Best Restaurants in Arkansas 2021 - Arkansas Times

Best Restaurants in Arkansas 2021
Best Restaurants in Arkansas 2021
Matthew Martin
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Arkansas Times’ Readers Choice restaurant contest. The issue went to press at a time when restaurants have, for just shy of one year, been faced with a pandemic and the necessary safety rules that have limited their customers. So, this year, we have a new category to join our traditional bests: Best Pandemic Dining. Our readers have praised Trio’s Restaurant and The Hive in Bentonville for keeping diners safely spaced. They’ve toasted Flyway Brewing and Superior Bathhouse Brewery in Hot Springs for their beer-to-go service. (A feature on Flyway, which also won Most Innovative, illustrates how it kept aloft.) They’ve recognized Star of India for its to-go packaging (and we give Sami Lal his due for his enduring success). Our readers found much to praise in restaurants from Fayetteville (Atlas and The Farmer’s Table Cafe) to Marianna (Jones Bar-B-Que Diner), from Dumas (Taylor’s Steakhouse) to Jonesboro (The Parsonage), from Rogers (Local Lime) to Cabot (Pea Farm Bistro), creating a road map to good eating in Arkansas. Enjoy.
