More heavy snow expected in Wyoming; whiteout conditions, up to 18 inches in some areas

More heavy snow expected in Wyoming; whiteout conditions, up to 18 inches in some areas

CASPER, Wyo. — Some areas of Wyoming are expected to see more heavy snow overnight Wednesday and through Friday.
Whiteout conditions are expected in some areas with 12-18 inches possible in the Snowy Mountain Range by 6 pm Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.
That could lead to “dangerous mountain travel conditions due to icy, snow packed roads and very low visibilities in falling and blowing snow,” the NWS in Cheyenne says. “Near whiteout conditions possible at times. Outdoor recreation may be life threatening to those caught unprepared for severe winter conditions.”

Two late-season snowstorms are set to sock the Rockies and Northeast simultaneously, bringing a foot or more of snow in spots, along with abnormally cold temperatures and bitter wind chills.
Conditions in both regions will deteriorate Thursday night. Denver could see a few inches of snow and it’s not out of the question that Boston sees some flakes by late Friday, although substantial accumulation is expected to focus in the hills and mountains to its west.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the following cities: Torrington, Wheatland, Bordeaux, and Guernsey until 8 AM Friday. Possible total accumulations from 2 to 4 inches. Those driving on I-25 may experience low visibilities to one quarter of a mile or less at times. A Winter Storms Warning has been issued until 5 PM Friday for the Sierra Madre and Snowy Mountain Ranges where 12-20 inches of snowfall are possible. 2-4 inches are possible at lower elevations and in surrounding areas of SE Wyoming. These headlines may expand as the event continues. Travel conditions could become hazardous, with snow-covered, slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow may significantly reduce visibilities, making travel difficult at times. Those traveling into the mountains with snowmobiles this weekend should consider having a GPS in case you become disorientated in the mountain snow.
