Weâve all heard of the âsilent majority.â The term was mentioned by President Nixon in 1969, who talked about middle Americans who werenât protesting the Viet Nam war or joining the counter culture â which was all the media of the day was covering. The silent majority didnât speak up much â they respected traditional American values with a good-natured approach to political issues.
They were silent, but they voted. In 1972, Nixon was reelected with one of the largest landslides in U.S. history - 520 electoral votes to only 17 for McGovern.
