TOKYO: With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics finally upon us after almost a year-long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the time has come for our 30 athletes to stand up and be counted.
After more than four years of sweat, tears and sacrifices, the 30 of them will go up against arguably the world’s best in their respective events in their quest to meet the three-medal target, including a first-ever gold, set by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

Other Sports: Minister hopes for three sports to deliver at least one gold

PETALING JAYA: The challenge has been laid for the Malaysian Olympians – Get Malaysia’s first gold in Japan!
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican has announced that the target for Tokyo is three medals and one of them is gold.
The sports earmarked to get medals are cycling, badminton and diving.
Reezal said the gold could be a joy for the nation, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and believes Malaysia has longed for someone to win the revered gold in the Olympics.
“When I spoke to the athletes, they showed great spirit, and many have shown great optimism to do something special in Tokyo. Even our chef de mission and badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei wants someone to break his record. He would be satisfied if that happens,”said Reezal from the Youth and Sports Ministry Tower in Putrajaya via a virtual press conference yesterday.

Badminton: Malaysian Open postponed indefinitely

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Open badminton championships has been postponed indefinitely and it will no longer be an Olympic Games qualifying event.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said the second-tier World Tour event can no longer be held on its scheduled May 25-30 dates due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the country.
"All attempts were made by the organisers (Badminton Association of Malaysia) and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants, but the recent surge in cases left no choice but to postpone the tournament," said BWF in a statement on Friday (May 7).
"BWF can confirm the rescheduled tournament will no longer take place in the Olympic qualifying window. New tournament dates will be confirmed at a later date."

Malaysia aiming to capture elusive badminton gold medal at Paris 2024

Saturday, 3 April 2021
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is refusing to put any "unnecessary pressure" on players heading to Tokyo 2020 as it sticks to its goal of achieving the country’s long-awaited first Olympic gold medal in the sport at Paris 2024.
Malaysia has achieved eight badminton medals since the sport made its debut on the Olympic programme at Barcelona 1992, but has so far failed to secure gold.
The nation has won 11 Olympic medals in all, but none were gold.
Lee Chong Wei holds three men’s singles silver medals, with last coming at Rio 2016 where Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong and Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying claimed medals of the same colour in men’s doubles and mixed doubles respectively.

Birmingham COVID-19 numbers for February 5th, 2021
As of the entry deadline for the 2021 All England, February 9, an athlete’s decision on whether to participate was informed by knowledge that 3328 confirmed new COVID-19 cases were detected in the preceding week for the city of Birmingham, where the venue is.  Granted that was remarkably down from a scary weekly total of 1100 cases higher seven days prior.

Badminton: Race to Tokyo heats up for shuttlers after BWF decision

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian shuttlers hoping to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in July must make the most of their opportunities over the next three months.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) have confirmed that there will be no more changes to the Race to Tokyo qualification process which concludes in mid-June.
This comes after they had extended the qualifying cut-off date from May 2 to June 15 to pave the way for the rescheduling of two crucial events – the Malaysian Open (May 25-30) and Singapore Open (June 1-6). There have been a number of qualifiers cancelled, including some lower-tier events, due to Covid-19 concerns and the most notable was the German Open, which was supposed to take place next week.
