Civil society bodies and eminent citizens across the nation issued statements decrying the arrest of Prothom Alo senior correspondent Rozina Islam and demanded her immediate release.
Addressing a webinar by the Committee for the Protection of Fundamental Rights (Moulik Odhikar Shurokkha Committee), eminent jurist Dr Shahdeen Malik commented on the use of the Official Secrets Act against Rozina Islam. I have only found one judgment under this law, and it was given by the High Court in 1983. This is a clear example that the government is using the criminal code to silence journalists in new ways, he said.

Fifty-one academics, human rights activists and lawyers have issued a statement demanding the release of Rohingya photographer Abul Kalam, who they claim landed in jail on Thursday for taking photos of buses departing Kutupalong for Bhasan Char.
Photographer Abul Kalam was brought to the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court in Ukhiya on Thursday with charges of impeding officers from discharging their duties during an incident that happened over seven months ago, according to court documents obtained by The Daily Star.
Organisers said Kalam was sent to Cox s Bazar Jail by a magistrate on Thursday.
A call to establish city courts for peaceful, low cost settlement of disputes

People from different strata of the society have made a call to the government for introducing city courts to resolve petty offences and disputes through out- of- the court arbitration.
The demand was made by eminent lawyers, public representatives and journalists at a workshop on the prospect of the city courts. The two-day workshop was held at Madaripur with concluding sessions on Saturday.
Drafted by Madaripur Legal Aid Association, a city court law was placed at the workshop to be examined and discussed.
